STUDY: Most cannabis edible overdoses in Canada involve children

Federal research shows 137 children have shown up at Canadian hospital emergency rooms for weed poisoning since Ottawa legalized cannabis edibles last October.

The Health Ministry research also says cannabis use among youth has increased overall, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

This trend is a reversal of long-term downward use before the feds repealed a criminal ban on recreational pot in 2018.

“Significant changes in the risk perception of this substance were also noted … suggesting a decreasing trend in the viewing of cannabis as a harmful substance,” according to the study called Sentinel Surveillance Of Injuries And Poisonings Associated With Cannabis.

Only 9% of high schoolers said marijuana was harmless.

B.C. cuts frequency of criminal record checks for workers in cannabis retail

Those working in recreational cannabis retail in B.C. will need to complete security verification every five years instead of every two, an obligation initially meant to keep organized crime out of the province’s legal weed market.

The change will apply for workers who currently have valid security screening. The period will be extended from the date of their initial verification, according to B.C. Ministry of Attorney General.

After multiple raids, visitors surge to Indigenous cannabis dispensary in B.C

Last month, Tupa’s Joint, an Indigenous cannabis dispensary in Vernon, B.C., was raided by members of the province’s Community Safety Unit. 

Tupa’s Joint does not have a provincial licence to sell cannabis, but the shop was opened with support from the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB), which passed its own regulations — the OKIB Cannabis Control Law.

These, though, will have an added kick. They are cannabis edibles infused with either CBD or THC, the active chemicals in marijuana — THC for recreational users and the CBD for its health and wellness properties.

Dynaleo believes it can produce more edible gummies than anyone else in Canada, and that there will be a shortfall in the industry of about 85 million of the edibles each year.

A History of Marijuana Use is Associated With Lower BMI in Those 60+, Says Study

According to a newly released study those who are 60 years of age or older who have a history of marijuana use generally have a lower body mass index (BMI) than those who do not have a history of marijuana use. Those with a history of marijuana use are also more likely to exercise regularly. All of this is according to a study published in the American Journal of Health and Behavior. The study is titled Exercise intervention outcomes with cannabis users and nonusers aged 60 and older.
