Dr. Sylvain Charlebois says although the product became legal on Thursday, October 17th, Health Canada has requested two months for products to be approved before they are sold for consumption.
"As of Thursday, companies can submit a proposal to Health Canada for approval," Charlebois says.
One major area of concern for Health Canada is surrounding cannabis edibles that might appeal to children and teens, which Charlebois says is being dealt with by the Federal government.
"If you look at amendments to the Cannabis Act that was just approved, it is highly unlikely that you will see any kinds of candy that would target children", according to Charlebois. "You'll probably see flavours like Hibiscus...things that target adults more."
In the meantime, Charlebois says because the product is technically legal, residents will be looking for cannabis edibles.
"People are going to be looking for the product, and guess what, the black-market is there to sell to them," Charlebois says.
For the next couple months, Charlebois predicts confusion in the cannabis market.
"People can actually make edibles at home, legally, so we're going to see a very muddy marketplace for the next little while," Says Charlebois.
