The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) is still experiencing a limited supply of cannabis edibles and it could be months before items are regularly found on the shelves.

Stores are carrying chocolates, soft chews and mints, along with vaping products and teas.

NSLC spokesperson Beverley Ware said licensed producers are working hard on getting more products approved and shipped.

"We sell out of the chocolates and the soft chews quite consistently, and that was expected because there's such a limited supply of this product," Ware told NEWS 95.7's The Rick Howe Show. "So we're constantly trying to bring on new licensed producers who will have these products available, so we can then offer them to our customers."

She expects it will be some time before stores will have a full supply of products.

"It's really going to be months," she said. "As soon as we get them, we're selling out because they're very popular."
 
Edibles along with extracts and topicals officially became legal in Canada on October 17, 2019.

That was the date licensed producers could start sending their product applications to Health Canada for approval, however the NSLC wasn't allowed to start issuing purchase orders until December 16.

Products started trickling into stores on Dec 23.

Earlier this week, the NSLC released its third quarter results, however since they cover sales from Sept. 30 to Dec. 29, edibles wouldn't have factored much into them.

Overall, during that time period, there were $17.4 million in recreational cannabis sales.

Ware said there was a surge in the first weeks and months following legalization.

"But since then, it's been really consistent. Pretty much week-to-week you can see what the sales are going to be," she said.

Last week, the province announced it would be more than doubling the number of  NSLC locations selling cannabis in Nova Scotia.

The NSLC's in Bedford (Mill Cove), Dartmouth (Tacoma Drive), Elmsdale and Tantallon will be among the 14 new locations.

There are currently four NSLC stores selling pot in the Halifax area; on Portland St. in Dartmouth, Joseph Howe Dr. in Halifax, Downsview Plaza in Lower Sackville and the stand-alone store in the south end on Clyde Street.
