4/20 fans celebrated online Monday as the marijuana enthusiasts' holiday was forced indoors this year due to the coronavirus epidemic.

A concert marking the day usually hosted in San Francisco by Sounds Bazaar and sponsor Weedmaps on April 20th was this year hosted on a live stream featuring musical guests Billy Ray Cyrus, Erykah Badu and Wiz Khalifa.

Despite the drug's prohibition at the federal level, many states have legalized the drug for medicinal and sometimes recreational purposes, and many businesses selling the drug remained open across the U.S. on Monday due to their designation in some states as essential businesses.

"This is cannabis's moment to find its purpose and its voice," Julie Armstrong, CEO of cannabis analytics firm Aurelius Data told USA Today. "It was the opportunity we never saw coming."

Organizers of Monday's "Higher Together: Sessions from Home" concert told CNN that the coronavirus pandemic had disappointed many looking forward to gatherings on 4/20 this year.

"We're human and we want to interact; we want to belong to something and gather," Alex Aquino of Sounds Bazaar said. "So it is a different shift in the vibe of it all."
