Today the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) published A Year in Review (2019-2020): Ontario’s first full year of legal cannabis operations as a resource for the Ontario cannabis industry. It provides comprehensive data including detailed sales figures by category and brand, pricing information and consumer trends.

This transparent and publicly available source of cannabis data is an important milestone in building Canada’s largest, most dynamic, legal cannabis marketplace. The report will evolve over time with the goal of supporting authorized retailers and licensed producers, informing social responsibility efforts and offering a transparent view into Ontario’s cannabis sector.

I am very pleased to share this historical data, which aims to assist the industry to better serve customers during this challenging COVID-19 period. Our goal is to always equip the sector with the tools and information it needs to combat the illegal market.

Cal Bricker, President & CEO of the OCS

The report is the first public data report from OCS and will be updated quarterly. The goal of OCS’s data program is to create a data connection between consumer’s purchase decisions, Canada’s licensed producers, authorized retail stores and the public.

Interesting insights from the report include:

  • Ontario consumers purchased more than 35 million grams of cannabis.
  • Consumers are finding value in legal, regulated and tested cannabis.
  • Steady growth of sales despite initial constrained supply that limited the number of retail stores.
  • Selection of products available in the marketplace grew rapidly, especially with the introduction of Cannabis 2.0 offerings.
  • Consumers prefer higher THC products.
  • Prices have decreased 25% on average in the last fiscal year.
