Nearly $8.5 million worth of cannabis seized by authorities in the same region in a matter of weeks.

Following a bust in late July that saw authorities in the Kawartha Lakes seize more than 6,000 cannabis plants, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has netted a second multi-million dollar bust in the same region within a matter of weeks.

The plants seized are allegedly equivalent to “two full dump trucks” and are valued at an estimated $2.3 million.

In addition to the plants, police also seized two ounces of cannabis resin (valued at $560), seven grams of cocaine, an RV mobile home, an ATV and a prohibited weapon.

The accused are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay in September. Under the federal Cannabis Act, the accused could face up to 14 years in prison if found guilty.

Last month, OPP officers raided a home in Kirkfield, Ont., seizing 6,152 cannabis plants, or “four full dump trucks” worth of cannabis.

That bust was estimated to be worth $6.2 million. Seven people were charged and authorities also seized two forklifts, a skid steer and multiple Health Canada licences.

Police also laid charges against 10 people in July after seizing nearly 4,000 cannabis plants and more than 800 pounds of processed weed following a raid in the Port Hope area.
