CBD oil is how most CBD products are made. While we can take CBD oil on its own, it’s much better if we take it in the form of a tincture, a gummy bear, a vape juice, or cream. But how is CBD oil made? To explain that, we have a guide explaining just that.
Choosing the Extraction Method
The first step to make CBD oil is to decide on how to extract the cannabidiol from hemp. Hemp is the plant from which Canadians source cannabidiol. The plant is rich in cannabidiol and low on THC. This makes it perfect for extracting the compound and turning it into oil.
Winterization
Once Canadians extract the CBD, they have to put the compound through a process of winterization. This simply means removing the undesirable compounds. A caveat to this is that winterization is a method that purifies the CBD. Thus, winterization is used when making CBD isolate.
To explain CBD isolate, we also have to explain the other forms of cannabidiol. There are three in total. Those are full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate. Full spectrum is a type of CBD that goes through the least amount of refining. This simply means that full spectrum CBD is the most organic form of cannabidiol.
Broad spectrum goes through a process of removing THC from the hemp, while CBD isolate removes all other active compounds of the hemp plant leaving only CBD.
Once we extract the CBD through CO2 and add in the necessary ingredients to make oil, Canadian CBD manufacturers decide on the type of CBD. In the case of CBD isolate, the next natural step is winterization.
Distillation
Yet another process that seeks to purify the CBD oil, even more, is distillation. This process is all about reaching the boiling points of various cannabinoids to remove them. This process is shorter than winterization, as that process already removes a ton of cannabinoids.
Distillation is done by heating the oil and waiting for various compounds to boil off. The compounds that boil turn into vapor where they drip into a separate container. The process is redone until all the unwanted compounds are removed from the oil.
At the end of this process, we’re left with pure CBD oil.
This is the beginner’s guide to making CBD oil. While no doubt we’ve explained it in a hasty matter, it is the bare minimum what Canadians need to know about it. But in this short guide, we will also explain the two additional steps that very few explain.
Let’s do that.
Combining CBD Oil With Other Ingredients
We did mention that CBD oil is the byproduct of this process. But we also mentioned that CBD oil gets made into various products. In order to make these products, we have to add various ingredients.
Some of these ingredients and terpenes are responsible for giving the product a different form, flavor, and scent. In many cases, extra ingredients are necessary for the making of CBD products. Depending on what product Canadian CBD manufactures are making, they will use ingredients that enhance the properties of the product.
Let’s take topicals for example. Topicals are products from CBD oil. But we also infuse these products with all kinds of ingredients that give various skin-related benefits. To make a CBD cream, we have to make it look like one. Whenever buying CBD creams, Canadians aren’t buying an oil solution, but a solution that resembles an ordinary cream product.
Another important thing to mention is that many of these ingredients have to be natural and organic. If you’re not using such ingredients, then no one will buy your product.
Lab Testing
CBD product manufacturers are aware that testing cannabidiol is essential. Without doing that, they won’t be able to sell their products. One thing that Canadians also need to be aware of is that testing is done at a laboratory independent of the makers of the products. Some of the best comparison sites such as cbdcanadaselect.ca only feature brands that are third party lab-tested.
This is done so that the CBD product manufacturer doesn’t influence the results. Since these laboratories have nothing to hide, they will tell the honest truth regarding the quality of the cannabidiol. Simply said, the only way to make sure that Canadians are buying quality products is to see laboratory results before purchasing a product.
On these results, Canadians can see anything from the quality of CBD, the use of harmful chemicals and metals, and more. This directly tells us whether or not the CBD has been extracted using CO2 or any other harmful extraction method.
