Manitoba will play host to a new cannabis product line aimed at funding efforts to legalize home growing in the province.

TobaGrown is taking its fight to enable Manitobans to grow cannabis at home by launching what it claims are Canada’s first not-for-profit legal cannabis products.

The products will be available in Manitoba and the funds raised will go toward the organization’s legal fees and court costs. Any remaining profits will be donated to charity.

The federal Cannabis Act allows adults of legal age in their province or territory to grow as many as four plants per residence for personal use, but each jurisdiction has its own rules. Both Manitoba and Quebec do not currently allow growing weed at home.

Last fall, TobaGrown announced it would join the fight to legalize home grows in Quebec and continue its lawsuit against the Manitoba government’s ban.

“A provincial government that denies its citizens the right to grow their four federally legal cannabis plants is on a slippery slope to removing other personal freedoms,” Av Singh, an expert witness for TobaGrown, said at the time.

That’s where the new, not-for-profit line of products for the Manitoba market comes in.

“All of TobaGrown’s profits will be used to fund our legal bills for our cases, with all remaining profits being donated to multiple local and national charities,” company founder Jesse Lavoie said in a statement. Those charities include Winnipeg Harvest, True North Aid, Manitoba Métis Heritage Fund, Habitat for Humanity Manitoba and Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity.

The company is currently eyeing the launch of two such products this year. The first one to be rolled out will be, fittingly, TobaRolls, a three-pack of 0.5-gram pre-rolls. The flower comes from a licensed producer in B.C. who provided the company with a generous price but has asked to remain anonymous.

The plan is to have the pre-rolls available at the end of February or early March.

A second product, called TobaSquad, is a line of pre-rolls sourced from multiple Manitoba-based licensed producers.

“Now, more than ever it is so important to support local business and valuable causes,” said Tim Doerksen, vice president of Natural Earth Craft Cannabis, one of the companies involved.

“TobaGrown is doing a fantastic job of creating awareness and demanding a change in the current laws surrounding the personal cultivation of cannabis,” added Bryce Oliver, master grower for Cypress Craft.

Ontario-based CannMart will sell end products of TobaGrown and its cultivation partners into the Manitoba market through Manitoba Liquors and Lotteries Corporation.

“CannMart believes strongly in the democratization of cannabis for all Canadians,” said Daniel Stern, CEO of CannMart.

“This not-for-profit initiative is an industry first, a great cause to support, and something we are proud to be a part of,” he continued.

TobaGrown reports that many dispensaries in Manitoba “have already confirmed their intention to carry these products.”

The company website also includes a GoFundMe page to support legal efforts to advance the constitutional challenge.
