“The store building previously housed one of Canada’s most iconic coffee chains and now serves the convenience of cannabis through the same drive-thru window.”

Ottawa is getting its first drive-thru cannabis store.

ShinyBud Cannabis will be opening the Carling Ave. location this weekend and customers will be able to pre-order products online or directly in the drive-thru.

The site appears to be the former home of a Tim Hortons and the company is marking the occasion by giving out free coffee, as well as hosting a charity barbecue in the afternoon. All proceeds will benefit Cannabis Amnesty.

“We’re pleased to have opened eastern Ontario’s only drive-thru experience, providing customers with quick and convenient access to our lineup of carefully curated and award-winning cannabis products, and knowledgeable staff from the comfort of their vehicle,” Kevin Reed, the company’s chairman and CEO said in a statement.

“The store building previously housed one of Canada’s most iconic coffee chains and now serves the convenience of cannabis through the same drive-thru window. From coffee to cannabis, this unique store features a small bricks-and-mortar footprint, allowing us to continue testing ideal store sizes that maximize revenue per square foot as we plan to open additional stores through our franchising program across Ontario,” Reed reported.

The location marks the seventh ShinyBud store in the Ottawa region and 41st overall in Ontario.

Last month, the Ontario government made cannabis delivery and curbside pickup permanent options for cannabis retailers, albeit with some restrictions.

In terms of curbside pickup, orders must be “completed in an area adjacent to the store that is captured by the store’s surveillance system.”

As for delivery, only a retail store authorization holder or its employees can make the deliveries, which must be made to a residence or private place during the store’s operating hours. Third-party delivery is not permitted.

Last March, Barrie welcomed its first cannabis drive-thru, courtesy of Tokyo Smoke.

Store owner Richard Bailey told CTV News that the drive-thru was well-received and proved to be a great option for commuters making their way to cottage country.
