Teen Marijuana Use and Depression: Looking at the Mental Health Link

A popular argument against legalization of marijuana is that evidence shows teen marijuana use may lead to mood disorders like depression in later life, but new research suggests that the link may not exist or at least may not be as pronounced as we might have feared.

There have been several small to medium studies that have appeared to show an associated risk between heavy marijuana use during adolescence and, in adulthood, developing mental health problems as well as physical problems like respiratory issues. However, previous research has often not looked at data gathered over a number of years and it has often, not because of the researcher teams’ errors but because of the nature of certain studies, been limited as to what it can tell us about adolescent use of marijuana and later-in-life health, instead focusing on cannabis toxicity and induced paranoia and other problems.
