Marijuana is Much Safer Than Alcohol and Tobacco, So Stop Asking

Though attitudes toward marijuana legalization are undoubtedly shifting, there are still a lot of Americans who can’t let go of the myths purporting the ‘dangers’ of cannabis. And those attitudes are still being pandered to, in large part from conservatives — most notably Republican presidential candidate and governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie.

“Marijuana is a gateway drug,” Christie told radio host Hugh Hewitt in April, echoing a long-standing yet not-quite accurate claim about marijuana. “We have an enormous addiction problem in this country. And we need to send very clear leadership from the White House on down through the federal law enforcement. Marijuana is an illegal drug under federal law. And the states should not be permitted to sell it and profit from it.”

It’s a strange stance for a conservative to take, considering how the renewed calls for continued federal prohibition openly clash with the ‘small government’...
