Diaz suspended 5 years for marijuana use at UFC 183

The veteran welterweight tested positive for marijauna metabolites in his post-fight drug test after a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of middleweight Anderson Silva in January. In addition to the suspension, Diaz was fined $165,000 (which is 33 per cent of his $500,000 fight purse from UFC 183). It was his third suspension for marijuana.

For what it’s worth, it takes at least five failed marijuana tests within a two-year window for players to be suspended that long in Goodell’s National Football League, while the fines are significantly lower than failed tests for other banned substances. Diaz’s attorney, Lucas Middlebrook, immediately declared that his client would not testify during the hearing, invoking his constitutional right not to incriminate himself via his testimony.

The failed test, which was administered between the two clean ones, was analyzed by Quest Diagnostics.
