Marijuana Sales Soon Legal In Oregon, And WA's Highest-Grossing Pot Shop Is Bracing For Competition

Two years ago, brothers Adam and Ramsey Hamide, both in their thirties, were self-employed online ticket brokers. Today they run Main Street Marijuana, the largest grossing marijuana retail store in the state of Washington, ringing up $3 million in sales last month. The store is located in Vancouver, near Washington’s border with Oregon and only 15 minutes from downtown Portland, so a large portion of the store’s customers come from Oregon where there have been no legal recreational marijuana sales.

Unexpected challenges have punctuated the brothers’ road to success. In their first month of sales, the pair did not fully understand the tax code they were working under, and did not charge high enough prices to cover the taxes they would have to pay. “The more the store sold, the more money it lost,” said Adam Hamide.
