Jamaica: Let's truly build a ganja industry

I am a 20-year-old young man sitting on the sidelines, observing the development being undertaken in one of Jamaica's most potent industries -- the marijuana industry. Marijuana is poised for development, especially as a result of the important pieces of legislation that are in train, one of which was piloted, ironically, by the now embattled Member of Parliament for St Elizabeth NE Raymond Pryce.

It was, in fact, the Daily Observer which broke the story on Pryce's work in this endeavour. These two Bills give way for the decriminalisation of marijuana and the establishment of a body which will issue a licence to ganja farmers. These developments have the potential to earn for Jamaica in the global nutraceuticals market, which is projected to exceed US$243 billion by 2015. A one per cent share of the industry translates to US$2.43b or J$221.1b -- this is 36 per cent of Jamaica's $612-billion...
