"I would be unsurprised when he leaves office if he doesn’t revert to views he held before," says Blunt

David Cameron dumped deeply held views on the need for drugs reform – forged by a close relative’s addiction – so he could become Tory leader, a senior MP said last night.

As a newly elected MP, Mr Cameron was a passionate campaigner in Parliament for the 40-year-old laws to be reviewed, and claimed the war on drugs had failed.

His strong stand came from having to witness a close relative’s “crippling and life-threatening drug addiction”, a new biography of him by Lord Ashcroft has revealed.

But he carried out a total U-turn to oppose any change when he stood to be the new leader of the Conservative Party in 2005.
