Paul O'Grady said he made the impulse decision in order to avoid Thailand’s tough anti-drug penalties.

Paul O’Grady has revealed he swallowed a cannabis stash as Thai airport guards approached him.

The Birkenhead-born entertainer feared he would be arrested in the notoriously anti-drug country when he realised, as they walked through Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, his then partner, Brendan Murphy, had left an amount of the illegal drug in his pocket.

The star, who was travelling to on to Australia with his late partner Brendan, in 1992, said he made the impulse decision in order to avoid Thailand’s tough anti-drug penalties.
