New York State Moves Closer To Growing Industrial Hemp

New York State stands ready to start growing industrial hemp as part of a research program next year.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says the State Agriculture Department has released regulations for the pilot program that will allow universities in the state to apply for 10 licenses to grow and study hemp.

The research crop is related to marijuana, but lacks any significant amount of THC, the psychoactive chemical that makes marijuana a recreational drug.

Instead, industrial hemp is used to make paper, clothing, rope, oils, food products as well as the cannabinoids that are used in medical marijuana.

"I think down the road, hemp will be something very significant for the Southern Tier.  For millions of acres throughout the state, certainly here in the Southern Tier, to grow this new crop.  We have a lot of investors, a lot of people interested
