Nearly 20 years after California passed medical marijuana, Gov. Brown sets statewide industry regulations

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a trio of bills into law Friday that create a system of oversight for the growth, manufacture and sale of medical marijuana in the state.

The new regulations come nearly 20 years after the state passed medical marijuana laws in 1996 – California was the first state to pass such laws.

The first statewide operating and licensing rules for cannabis growers, cannabis product manufacturers and retail marijuana shops are aimed at bringing order and oversight to the state’s approximately $1.3 billion medical cannabis industry, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The new package of laws will require individuals or companies involved in any aspect of the cannabis industry to obtain at least one of 17 various licenses and will restrict the number of licenses one company may acquire,...
