Cannabis should be as legal as cigarettes because the war on drugs is a 'disaster', the MP leading a historic debate has claimed.

Labour's Paul Flynn says it is time for 'timid' MPs to show courage after 220,000 people signed a petition to make the sale, use and production of the Class B drug legal .

The government insists 'substantial scientific evidence' shows marijuana is 'a harmful drug that can damage human health' .

But a three-hour debate in Parliament tomorrow will hear legalisation could raise £900million a year in taxes.

Mr Flynn told the Mirror the laws for cannabis should be similar to those for cigarettes - legal but with warnings for people with mental health conditions or other health issues.
