STUDIES FIND PSYCHOACTIVE DRUG SAFER THAN ALCOHOL WHEN DRIVING

We have seen cannabis prohibition laws start to crumble over the past few years, and as they continue to do so, more research is being done on the substance that has long been a part of human existence.

Recently, a study was conducted to determine the effects of driving under the influence of marijuana versus driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving with both in the system.

The study, conducted by the University of Iowa’s National Advanced Driving Simulator, was partially funded and sponsored by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Institute of Drug Abuse, and the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

What the researchers found was, “alcohol significantly increased lane departures/minimum and maximum lateral acceleration; these measures were not sensitive to cannabis.” They also concluded cannabis-influenced drivers “may attempt to drive more cautiously to compensate for impairing effects, whereas alcohol-influenced drivers often underestimate their impairment and take more...
