Jamaica: Cannabis industry’s social justice challenge

Jamaica’s Health Minister invited attendees to visit his country to enjoy cannabis tourism, a Town Hall linked “Black Lives Matter” shootings to the Drug War and a review of rapid advances in psychedelic therapies were but three moments that show the diversity of presentations at the International Drug Policy Reform Conference Nov. 18-21, 2015.

But what about the communities devastated by the Drug War? While reformers make progress in sentencing reform and cannabis legalization and feel a sense of optimism for continued progress, there is concern that poor people and communities of color may be left behind or disadvantaged as the marijuana industry grows and gains power. A consensus emerged that a concerted effort is needed for legalizers and regulators to address economic inequities. One campaign focused on helping “Pookie,” a hypothetical street dealer who finds himself without a job or remains criminalized in a regulated market.
