Greece: 36 SYRIZA Deputies are Calling for the Legalization of Medical Cannabis

36 leftist SYRIZA MPs submitted a question to Greek Health Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis regarding the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. The question, titled “National plan for medicinal cannabis,” follows a previous request for the legalization of medical marijuana production in February.

The SYRIZA deputies note that one of the consequences of their first request lead to the publication of a joint ministerial decree on the matter, resulting in the first cultivation of industrial cannabis with the first crop to be collected in Fall.

The deputies have cited requests by Greek patients calling for the revision of outdated legislation to allow for medicine containing THC to be prescribed. They want to have legal possession of marijuana for medical reasons. The MPs presented data from other European countries that have already legalized marijuana for patients in all its forms with the support of the National Health Service.
