Spare a thought for Bert Trautmann, a goalkeeper who suffered two cracked vertebrae in his neck while playing for Manchester City in the 1956 FA Cup final. “He played on for the last 15 minutes and made saves that won them the game,” says Prof David Finn. It was not just adrenalin that got him through, says the NUI Galway researcher; he probably also relied on the body’s own marijuana, which Finn now studies in order to develop new painkillers.
