Illinois House passes measure to decriminalize certain marijuana charges

SPRINGFIELD (WREX) - Getting caught with pot in Illinois might not mean an automatic jail sentence anymore.

House lawmakers just passed a bill that makes possessing small amounts of marijuana punishable by a ticket and fine instead of a criminal charge.

By small amount, they mean 15 grams or less of marijuana.

The bill states the maximum fine would be $125 and no jail time.

More than 100 Illinois communities already have ordinances allowing officers to either write a ticket or arrest a person for possession.

Supporters say this will create uniformity across the state when it comes to possession charges.

The measure now moves to the Senate.
