A Closer Look at States Trying to Legalize Marijuana in 2016

By the end of this year, several more states in the U.S. could be among those who have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational purposes. Of course, their success is up to the activists and voters in each state. If you’re in one of these states, here is what you need to know.

States where recreational legalization is on the ballot: Nevada

States where medical legalization is on the ballot: Florida

States where activists are going through the legislature or attempting to make the ballot for recreational or medical legalization: California, Vermont, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, Rhode Island, Maine, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, Arkansas

Medical-Marijuana "Business Park" Growing in Tempe, Arizona

Zoned Properties, a medical-marijuana real-estate company, is developing what it bills as the state's first "medical-marijuana business park."

The Scottsdale-based company announced on March 17 that it had signed a deal to lease 25,000 square feet of space in a building near 52nd Street and University Drive in Tempe, with an option to lease 40,000 square feet. As a press release notes, Zoned Properties lobbied Tempe successfully to change its zoning requirements a few months ago, allowing 25,000-square-foot medical-marijuana cultivation and food-processing facilities.

Arizona Counties Try but Fail to Restrict Home Medical-Marijuana Cultivation

As cannabis advocates debate whether a proposed Arizona legalization law allows counties or towns to ban home growing, attempts to regulate home cultivation of medical marijuana have failed.

The inability of counties to control home cultivation by qualified medical-marijuana patients gives insight into how the planned legalization measure may work for those who want to grow their own.

Is Arizona the next state to legalize recreational marijuana?

Last week, I wrote about the need for research into the positive effects of marijuana. I chose this as my first topic because of how important I believe it to be. If I had to list in order of importance that would be issue 1A and issue 1B would be the decriminalization of marijuana.

This is another area where progress has been made, but there is still much work ahead.

Many states are hoping to have votes on marijuana laws this election. Our state is no exception.  The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol, a ballot-initiative backed by the Washington-based Marijuana Policy Project, has the same formula led to legalizing weed in Colorado. MPP has helped states lobby for and pass reform of Marijuana laws since founded in 1995.

‘Just Add Weed’: How Brand Licensing Allows Cannabis Companies to Expand Across State Lines

Federal cannabis prohibition is a buzzkill on many levels, but for cannabusinesses in legal states, it’s an especially frustrating hurdle to expansion. When a brand outgrows its home turf, it can’t just start shipping packages of product to the next state over.

Despite the difficulty, a number of companies have managed to cross state lines. Colorado’s Dixie Elixirs has products in Washington, California, and Oregon. They recently launched in Nevada, and Chief Marketing Officer Joe Hodas says the brand is close to inking a deal in Arizona.

Arizona Could Soon Have More Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

New medical marijuana dispensaries could be coming to Arizona with the health department set to approve new applications for only the second time.

Right now there are 99 dispensaries in Arizona, but there could be about two dozen more approved this summer. Tom Salow is with the Arizona Department of Health Services, which runs the state’s medical marijuana program. He said the department will give preference to applications for dispensaries in counties that don’t have one, as well as dispensaries that can serve the greatest number of patients in a 10-mile radius.

"This isn’t a merit-based application process," he said. "If you’re in compliance, you go on to the next step."

ARIZONA MARIJUANA-LEGALIZATION INITIATIVE DOESN'T LET CITIES BAN HOME CULTIVATION, CAMPAIGN INSISTS

Does a marijuana-legalization initiative expected to be on the ballot in November allow cities and towns to ban adults from growing their own marijuana?

Under the initiative, adults 21 and older could grow up to six plants, with a 12-plant-per-household maximum.

Ryan Hurley, a lawyer for the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol in Arizona, which is pushing the initiative, says cities cannot ban home growing.

But lawyer Tom Dean, who supports the more permissive proposal offered by Arizonans for Mindful Regulation, claims the opposite:
