Marijuana legalization is leading in every state where it’s on the ballot this November

Marijuana advocates are heading into the final weeks of the 2016 campaign with the wind at their backs as the latest polling shows legalization measures currently favored by voters in all five states where they're on the ballot.

This is something of a reversal from just a month ago, when the most recent polling had shown voters wary of legalization measures in Massachusetts and Arizona. But the margins of support aren't huge in any state, meaning that the contests could still swing either way.

Foes of legalized recreational marijuana in Arizona have cash edge

Foes of legalized recreational marijuana are building up a war chest in a bid to kill Proposition 205, apparently with a last-minute barrage of media.

New reports filed with the Secretary of State’s Office show that the anti-205 Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy has so far collected slightly more than $2 million.

That still leaves the group short of the nearly $3.2 million reported by the pro-205 Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

But the pro-205 forces already have burned through more than $3 million of that, much of it to get the measure on the ballot in the first place. The latest report shows that organization has less than $170,000 on hand.

Pharma Company Admits Opposing Marijuana Legalization to Protect Its Corporate Profits

Those of us involved in the marijuana legalization movement have long assumed that those companies that produce and sell competing products — especially alcohol and tobacco — were working behind the scenes to try to maintain marijuana prohibition and to protect their duopoly for legal recreational drugs. These industries have lobbyists who regularly work with state and federal elected officials to keep legal marijuana off the market.

These 3 States May Vote Against Legalizing Marijuana This November

When searching for America's fastest-growing industries, chances are you'll find marijuana near, or at, the top. Cannabis research firm ArcView pegged legal sales of the drug at $5.4 billion in 2015 and believes the legal industry can grow organically by 30% per year through 2020. This would bring legal sales for the industry to nearly $22 billion if this estimate were to come to fruition.

Don't legalize marijuana in Arizona, urged Colorado mayor

A Colorado mayor and law officer urged Arizona voters to oppose Proposition 205, citing making marijuana legal would threaten Arizonans’ safety.

More children are using drugs in Colorado since recreational marijuana was legalized four years before, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said at a news conference.

The mayor said that, “The problem with the leap to legalization is the message it sends to young people in terms of their perception of risk. That’s what’s caused the dramatic increase in youth use in Colorado.”

The Arizona’s Proposition 205 has been criticized by Suthers, police Sgt. Jim Gerhardt, two Arizona law-enforcement leaders and Thornton. The bill will allow the recreational use of marijuana within certain limits.

Marijuana-legalization ad plugs money for Arizona schools

The campaign to legalize marijuana unveiled a new ad Thursday touting the potential financial benefits to Arizona public schools.

The ad features a teacher and two parents who said Thursday they support marijuana legalization because the state's education system desperately needs increased funding. The campaign staged a news conference outside of a Tempe charter school, where one of the supporters teaches.

The ad will air on Facebook, Instagram and other digital platforms, said Barrett Marson, spokesman for the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. The campaign is spending "six figures" on the ad, Marson said. He said it could also appear on TV.

Three Phoenix Policemen Resign After Forcing Teen to Eat Marijuana

The department identified the police officers involved as Richard Pina, Jason McFadden and Michael Carnicle. All had been on the job for less than a year, although McFadden had about 10 years' experience with the Chicago Police Department. The demoted supervisor was identified as Jeff Farrior.

Police are investigating the incident, and Pina and McFadden could face criminal charges, said police spokesman Sergeant Jonathan Howard. Carnicle was at the scene but did not participate in the incident, Howard said.

The police union could not immediately be reached for comment. It was not clear if any of the officers had lawyers.

5 States Could Legalize Recreational Marijuana Use This Year — Here's What We Know

Nearly half of the US has already legalized marijuana for either medical or recreational use. This November, nine states could continue the trend.

Of those nine states, five have ballot initiatives that could result in legal recreational use. Most significantly, California could legalize recreational use — thus making the entire West Coast a legal enclave for recreational cannabis.

All the initiatives below will be voted on this November, alongside the presidential election. Here's everything we know:

Arizona marijuana initiative wording complicates DUI prosecutions

A single paragraph 13 pages into the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act, also known as Arizona's Prop 205, may create an insurmountable obstacle to prosecutors who are trying to convict people of driving under the influence of marijuana.

"This provision protects marijuana-using drivers unlike any other substance-using drivers within the state of Arizona," said Bill Montgomery, who is the Maricopa County Attorney and a vocal opponent of the initiative.
