Medical cannabis workshop: 'incredibly cumbersome' to get drugs to patients

Australia’s first doctors’ workshop on the medical uses of cannabis has heard about the complex situation around its legality.

The Melbourne conference was held with the hope of improving the medical profession’s awareness about the issue.

They hope to help doctors across the country clarify how the drug can be used and the legal situation, which can differ from state to state.

David Caldicott, a senior medical lecturer at Australian National University told Guardian Australia there was a lack of clarity among both doctors and patients due to confusing government frameworks.

Prohibition didn't work for alcohol and it's failing for marijuana

Why haven’t we legalised marijuana already? It’s a question brought to mind after reading Fairfax crime writer John Sylvester’s recent report on Melbourne as, in the words of assistant commissioner (crime) Steve Fontana, “the engine room of the country’s cannabis industry”.

Sylvester takes the reader behind the scenes of the old-style anti-pot crusade being waged by Fontana and his men, as “detectives from the Drug Taskforce […hit] crop houses at a record rate”.

Squint a little and it could be Chicago in the 1930s, with prohibition-enforcing lawmen pledging to take down the syndicates.

Australia: Two Medicinal Cannabis Trials to Start

Trials of cannabis-derived medicines are hoped to have answers for cancer pain and nausea.

Medlab Clinical Limited has received Human Research Ethics Committee approvals to begin human trials of two different cannabis-based medicines.

Developed at the medical life science company’s Sydney laboratory facility, the medicines have two different applications and will be clinically tested at different locations.

Medlab says the impending commencement of the trials will be a significant advancement for cannabis research globally.

The first medicine, NanaBis, is set to be clinically tested in advanced stage cancer patients with intractable pain.

Faster Path to Medicinal Cannabis for Australians Reopened as Government Defeated in Senate

Medicinal cannabis produced overseas will be easier to access for terminally ill patients, after the Senate voted to remove tighter controls imposed by the Federal Government.

The changes will restore 'fast-tracked' access to some unregistered medicinal cannabis medications produced overseas, but the move has been slammed by the Government as "reckless".

While taking steps last year to make medicinal cannabis more accessible, the Government also put in place stricter regulations.

While doctors previously only had to notify the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of their intention to treat a terminally ill patient with the unregistered medication, the changes forced doctors to apply to the TGA for permission.

Medicinal marijuana and the lengths Australian farmers must go to in securely growing it

Fingerprint scanners, motion sensor laser alarms, security teams and top secret locations sound like the stuff of spy movies, not Australian farms.

But that is the reality for a new breed of farmers trying their hand at medicinal cannabis, who have to make sure the crop is secure from paddock to processor.

"Imagine having all kinds of questions thrown at you like 'What happens if someone shows up with a gun, what are you going to do?'" said Adam Benjamin from Medifarm, a Sunshine Coast-based company and the first in Queensland to be given the green light to grow the controversial crop under strict licence.

Industry regulator the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has now approved 12 businesses in Australia to grow or manufacture medicinal cannabis.

Pnina Feldman's Cannabis Stock Queensland Bauxite Clears the Air on Andrew 'Dr Pot' Katelaris Confusion

A bit of notoriety is good for a medicinal cannabis start-up, but obviously not too much.

Pnina "Diamond Rose" Feldman's well known pot stock, Queensland Bauxite Ltd, had to clear the air on Monday as to the status of an employee at its 55 per cent owned Medical Cannabis Ltd (MCL) – company founder and secretary of the Hemp Party, Andrew Kavasilas.

"It has come to our attention that there has been some confusion between Andrew Kavasilas of (MCL) and Andrew Katelaris," said the ASX release.

Katelaris is the controversial deregistered doctor, known as Dr Pot, who was arrested recently and will face court in a few weeks after being charged with some cannabis-related offences.
