Vancouver Police Unit apologizes for tweets warning about ‘shatter’

Have you heard of a drug called shatter? It's a highly potent marijuana product that looks like toffee. The Vancouver Police Gang Unit recently put out a warning about its dangers, but as Kristen Robinson reports, marijuana advocates are now firing back.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Gang Unit has  apologized for a series of inaccurate tweets on Sunday warning about overdoses in connection with the drug “shatter.”

Police shatter credibility on marijuana extract

It was a single Tweet, one some say has shattered police credibility when it comes to marijuana.

.@VPDGangUnit Shatter is a marijuana extract. Show me a case where someone has actually OD'd from this? You can't. pic.twitter.com/rlGtKrGIml

While well-intentioned, our tweets about #Shatter weren’t accurate & have been deleted. Our apologies. We will do better in future.

Canadian Dispensaries Plan To Defy Police Orders

Nanaimo medical marijuana dispensaries will remain open, despite the threat of police enforcement.

Medical marijuana dispensaries have reached out to government for clarity on potential new regulations and help in the lead-up to a deadline to stop selling marijuana. But dispensaries have no plans to close, according to the new Nanaimo Cannabis Coalition.

“Our coalition has stated we will remain open … because people need their medicine,” said Matthew O’Donnell, coalition spokesman.

Nanaimo marijuana dispensaries have until midnight to shut down business

Medical marijuana can be obtained at many local dispensaries.

Medical marijuana dispensaries in Nanaimo have until the end of tonight to shut their doors, or risk criminal charges.

Last week, Vancouver Island RCMP delivered letters stating the businesses are illegal and operators had seven days to close or face arrest.

Brandy Cavanagh with Mid-Island Health and Wellness earlier had told CKNW she made no plans to close her dispensary.

She says she operates a legitimate business, with all her patients requiring a prescription to buy medicinal pot.

Marijuana dispensaries warned to close up shop

Brandy Cavanagh, general manager of Mid-Island Health and Wellness Association, is upset after receiving written notice from the RCMP last Thursday that her marijuana dispensary has seven days to suspend operations.

Medical marijuana dispensary managers plan a united front and appeals to government in the wake of an ultimatum from the Nanaimo RCMP to shut down shop or face arrests.

The Nanaimo RCMP put 10 medical marijuana dispensaries on notice Thursday that they had seven days to stop the sale of marijuana and marijuana derivatives or they could be subject to police enforcement.

Medical marijuana shops have been growing in number in Nanaimo, selling bud, tinctures and marijuana-infused brownies.

Experts predict surge of pot shops across Canada after Trudeau win

The day after the Liberals won the federal election, cannabis consultant Eric Nash’s inbox was hit with 20 e-mails from people across Canada asking for guidance on how to open marijuana dispensaries.

Until now, the growth of dispensaries – which remain illegal under federal drug laws – has generally been concentrated in Vancouver and Victoria, where local governments and police have largely allowed them to flourish.

But a handful of stores began operating in other provinces over the past several weeks and experts predict dozens more could open across the country in the wake of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pledge to legalize and regulate recreational sales – something that could take at least two years to become a reality.

Marijuana society may close Port Alberni storefront weeks after opening

Port Alberni’s first and only medical marijuana dispensary may be shutting its doors for good today after a short stint in the city.

WeeMedical Dispensary Society opened its Port Alberni location two weeks ago but it has quickly learned its not welcome.

The city’s mayor says such dispensaries are illegal and should not operate in the city until they are.

“We don’t want to be in the position as a city where we’re seeming to endorse something that currently isn’t legal,” says Port Alberni mayor Mike Ruttan. “Frankly, for a business to open up without even discussing it with the city beforehand is disrespectful.”
