Cannabis for kids seminar held for parents of children with autism, epilepsy

VANCOUVER — Kim Turkington’s five-year-old daughter Ella was so heavily medicated for seizures last year, she slept most of the day, her waking hours spent in a deep state of melancholy.

“All day long she said ‘I feel sad.’ Those were the only words that came out of her mouth. And it’s meds. She was a depressed four year old and it was terrible,” said Turkington, who lives in Surrey with her husband and two children.

Ella, who has epilepsy and autism, has failed to respond to seven different types of seizure medication.

Her parents were desperate to try something new, and had been doing a lot of research about cannabis oil, which contains a low amount of THC and high amounts of cannabidiol (CBD), the component believed to reduce seizures.

Vancouver Police rule out crackdown on local marijuana dispensaries

Vancouver’s police chief says the VPD has better things to do than clamp down on the city’s marijuana dispensaries.

He made those comments Friday following the furor over Health Canada sending “cease and desist letters” to several pot shops.

Chief Constable Adam Palmer says the VPD has acted on 11 search warrants between 2014 and August 2015, and would only act on those dispensaries suspected of selling to youth, or connected with a criminal enterprise.

“We will continue to do search warrants on those, but I’m not retooling all 13,00 officers to be going after marijuana dispensaries, there’s much more important work to do,” Palmer says.

Palmer says as far as the VPD’s response to marijuana dispensaries goes they “just aren’t a priority.”

Health Canada threatens BC marijuana dispensaries with police raids

VANCOUVER -- Health Canada has threatened pot dispensaries with police raids, but at least one organization wants more information on what it has done wrong.

The health agency confirmed it has sent letters to 13 compassion clubs and dispensaries warning of possible RCMP raids if they don't stop selling or advertising marijuana and comply with several demands.

The B.C. Compassion Club Society provides legally approved medical marijuana to more than 9,000 members and spokeswoman Jamie Shaw said it doesn't advertise cannabis or cannabis products.

"It's confusing for us right now. We're trying to figure out what the problem is," she said.

John Conroy, the society's lawyer, has fired off a terse letter to Health Canada.

Joy Davies resigns as Liberal candidate over pro-pot Facebook comments

Joy Davies, the Liberal Party candidate in the B.C. riding of South Surrey-White Rock, has resigned after pro-pot comments she made on Facebook came to light during the federal election campaign.

Her resignation, announced by the party on Thursday afternoon, comes after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said Davies's promotion of the merits of marijuana does not reflect official party policy or his personal beliefs.

In 2013, Davies commented on Facebook that marijuana reduces family violence and that growing it in a home poses no harm to children. She also wrote that the Canadian Cancer Society is "another outlet for big pharma."

Joy Davies, B.C. Liberal Candidate, Defends Past Remarks On Pot

OTTAWA — A Liberal candidate in British Columbia's Lower Mainland is standing by comments she made on Facebook saying that marijuana causes no harm to children and decreases domestic violence, and that the Canadian Cancer Society supports big pharma.

South Surrey–White Rock candidate Joy Davies told The Huffington Post Canada on Wednesday that she believes Canadians are ill-informed about the benefits and risks of marijuana.

Health Canada has "harmed millions of Canadians," she said, by preventing easy access to marijuana to those suffering with chronic pain.

But her opponent in the hotly contested riding — a former safe Tory seat — believes Davies is out of touch with the riding's priorities.

Lift Podcast: An Interview With Jonathan Page On Mapping The Cannabis Genome

Last week we reported on the groundbreaking new study from Canadian researchers using genomic analysis to map and compare over 100 different cannabis strains. Their findings help give a clearer picture of the genetic background of various strains and types in an industry that has long been in the dark about genetic accuracy and consistency.

This week, we had a chance to sit down with Jonathan Page, President and CEO of Anandia Labs and an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia to discuss cannabis research and the implications of this most recent study. The hour long interview is available below:

Kamloops receives its first application for a medical marijuana grow operation

KAMLOOPS – Gateway Industrial Park could potentially be the home of Kamloops’s first medical marijuana grow operation.

“This is a first within the City of Kamloops. While we have had other inquiries this is the only formal application,” development and engineering services director Marvin Kwiatkowski says.

The application is to rezone the property at 8170 Dallas Drive, which is currently zoned industrial. Medical marijuana grow operations are only permitted in heavy industrial areas. The matter is expected to come to council Sept. 29 with a public hearing as early as Oct. 20.
