Vancouver sticks to ban on marijuana goods

Vancouver's second night of public hearings Thursday on its proposal to regulate illegal marijuana dispensaries was overshadowed by a Supreme Court of Canada ruling released earlier in the day that could directly affect the city's plan to ban all marijuana-infused products from pot shops.

In upholding a lower B.C. court ruling, seven Supreme Court judges were unanimous in concluding prohibition of non-dried forms of medical marijuana used for making goods such as brownies, cookies and tea violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

To date, the courts have required only dried marijuana be accessible to Canadians when authorized by a doctor, with more than 18,000 British Columbians legally allowed to access marijuana for medical purposes.

'This court case means the world to me,' says BC pot activist, whose girlfriend is fighting cancer

The Supreme Court of Canada has unanimously ruled that medical marijuana users have the constitutional right to be able to consume edible medical marijuana products, such as cannabis oils, teas and brownies.

The ruling, which takes effect immediately, is already having an impact on those who rely on cannabis extracts and edibles to treat medical conditions.

"Last night, patients across Canada fell asleep as criminals for making cannabis tea with their otherwise lawfully possessed cannabis," said Kirk Tousaw, the B.C lawyer who argued for the federal government's ban to be removed. "This morning those patients are no longer criminals."

City of Vancouver debates how to regulate marijuana trade

City Hall was standing room only on Wednesday night (June 10) as medical marijuana supporters and opponents crammed into council chambers for a public hearing to regulate the pot business in Vancouver.

The city is considering regulations to licence marijuana dispensaries, which would require them to be 300 metres from any community centres or schools, as well as that same distance apart from each other.

The public hearing began with a presentation from city manager Dr. Penny Ballem, who said the Vancouver has seen a sharp increase in dispensaries this year, up from 60 in January to 94 in June.

Vancouver hashes out pot shop regulations, ban on edibles not popular

It’s not every day groups of people light spliffs on City Hall’s front steps, but it’s not every day city council deliberates becoming the first government in Canada to bring pot shops into a legal framework.

Vancouver city council started hashing out the details of regulating marijuana-related businesses at City Hall on Wednesday evening, the beginning of what will be a marathon public hearing over whether the city should create rules for businesses that are selling an illegal product.

More than 160 people showed up for a chance to speak to the proposed rules, which have been strongly condemned by the federal government.

Public airs views at hearing over medical marijuana dispensaries in Vancouver

VANCOUVER — A public hearing on Vancouver’s proposal to regulate pot shops is heating up with more than 150 people set to speak.

Pot-legalization advocates, dispensary owners and patients crammed city hall on Wednesday evening as the hearing began.

City manager Penny Ballem says the number of authorized medical marijuana users in British Columbia accounts for nearly half of all those in Canada.

The city is proposing new regulations to control the rapid growth of illegal pot shops, which have multiplied from fewer than 20 to 94 over the past three years.

The regulations would include a new business licence category, a $30,000 fee and a requirement that stores be 300 metres away from schools, community centres and other pot shops.

Cannabis Day organizers must 'cease and desist,' says City of Vancouver

City says organizers do not have a permit to set up tents on July 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery

The City of Vancouver has told organizers of an annual Canada Day marijuana festival to 'cease and desist' any marketing or promotion because they have not obtained a permit.

'Cannabis Day' is held every year on July 1 in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Thousands of people usually show up to support marijuana legalization and peruse the smorgasbord of pot products— like candies, cookies, lemonade, and free joints — offered by cannabis vendors in pop-up tents.

Debate over regulating medicinal marijuana at City Hall tonight

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How do you feel about the proliferation of pot dispensaries in Vancouver? The often heated debate over regulating medical marijuana will be front and centre at City Hall this evening. As of a few days ago, more than 60 people had already signed up to speak at the public hearing.

Marijuana activist Dana Larsen will be there and he says regulation in Vancouver would be a big step forward for dispensaries and for Canada. However, he’s hoping to have a few things in the proposal altered.

“The one big thing is they want to limit us from being 300 metres away from schools and community centres and other dispensaries, and you know, liquor stores only have 150 metre limit.”

Public hearings on Vancouver's marijuana dispensaries set to begin

Public hearings begin Wednesday to help fine-tune Vancouver’s plans to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries – and shape a policy that one advocate says will be copied by cities across Canada.

Dana Larsen, director of the Vancouver Dispensary Society and operator of two dispensaries, noted the City of Victoria has already cited Vancouver as a model for policies it is developing as it grapples with the issue.

“A lot of smaller cities don’t have the resources to devote time and staff effort to analyzing this and figuring out what these rules should be,” Mr. Larsen said in an interview on Tuesday. “They’re going to copy whatever Vancouver does and tweak it a little bit for their own community.”
