Adventures in Brave New Weed: Inside a Weed Tech Start-Up

At Meadow, technologists and cannabis enthusiasts are building the future of weed (and the industry to support it).

Mention the name "Meadow" to anyone in San Francisco's startup community and the conversation is instantly hijacked to a long discussion about America's first boom industry in the last three decades.

Everyone wants to know where "the industry" is heading, and how they can get into it. (Oh, and by the way, what exactly is the difference between a sativa hybrid and CBD?). The technologists and entrepreneurs at Meadow are leading that discussion.

California Marijuana Legalization Faces Unlikely Foe: Growers

Hezekiah Allen is a third-generation marijuana farmer in this Northern California county, where the cool coastal fog pours off the Pacific Ocean, coaxing pot plants to heights of 20 feet.

The executive director of the California Growers Association trade group, Allen has long sought an end to what he calls "prohibition" and has looked forward to a day when he and the thousands of pot farmers here would no longer be outlaws.

But he said he can't bring himself to vote for Proposition 64, a referendum on California's November ballot that would legalize cultivation, sale and recreational use of marijuana.

While pot purveyors might seem to be likely Prop. 64 supporters, Allen's ambivalence is widespread within the industry.

These States Are the Most Likely to Legalize Marijuana in November

Don't look now, but the November elections are just over five weeks away. In addition to choosing the 45th president of the United States, voters in nine states will decide the fate of marijuana, which has become a front-and-center issue this year.

The expansion of the marijuana industry is impressive in two respects. First, its growth rate is practically unmatched. According to cannabis research firm ArcView, legal marijuana sales could grow at a 30% annual clip between now and 2020, all on account of organic sales growth and legalization by more individual states.

Poll: California Voters Back Recreational Use Of Marijuana

California may soon become the fifth state to allow the recreational use of marijuana, according to a new KPIX 5/SurveyUSA poll released Thursday.

In the latest poll, 52 percent of those asked favored the passage of Prop. 64 – a measure that would legalize, regulate and tax the recreational use of marijuana.

Only 41 percent of those asked are opposed to the measure with 6 percent saying they were undecided and 1 percent saying they would abstain from voting on it.

The measure will allow the legal use of one ounce or less of marijuana by adults 21 and over in California. In addition, it allows adults to cultivate up to six plants for personal use in a private, enclosed space.

The Bay Area's Favorite Record Store Will Soon House Its Own Marijuana Dispensary

Amoeba Records, the iconic record store brand with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and an original location in Berkeley, CA, has announced that the latter store will sooon house a marijuana dispensary in addition to being one of the most cherished musical institutions on the West Coast.

Having already opened a marijuana doctor's office within the store, plans to expand to a full-blown dispensary were submitted earlier in the year by Amoeba owners Marc Weinstein and David Prinz, and word of the acceptance came through this week. So now it is official: A countercultural icon will continue its presence in a move that would have seemed unthinkable even a few short years ago. That's the bay area for ya.

Could Prop. 64 Bring On-Demand Delivery of Marijuana?

The slick website offers many ways to get high. Three pre-rolled joints will cost you $30. A gram of hash is $45. Blueberry, pineapple or brownie-flavored cannabis treats go for about $12 a bag. (“Caution,” the label says, they are “very strong.”)

It takes just few taps on a smart phone to place an order, and then the goods arrive.

“I’ve had it where a patient who doesn’t have a medical card gets it through our partner service… in less than 15 minutes, and we have marijuana to their door in 45,” said Nick Ocampo of Sacramento, who owns mynugrun.com, one of many companies in California that sell weed online and deliver it on demand.
