Sister Kate: We’re better off removing the ‘canna-bans’

By legalizing cannabis, we allow law enforcement to fulfill its obligations to all citizens. By banning cannabis, the lawmakers ensure that industry participants are not provided with the same protection that other citizens receive.

It’s been two weeks since the cannabis ban was reaffirmed by the Merced City Council and the Sisters are about to shine a great big dual-beamed light on the Central Valley of California. One beam comes from Los Angeles, the other from London. The lights that will shine upon the Valley are going to be bright. If we are lucky, they will chase away the cockroaches of old paradigm.

These lights are actually a documentary series that (God willing) will be aired on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Choice Life: Advocating support for cannabis oil bill - Daily Herald

Last Friday marked Madelena's three-year bone marrow birthday, and coincidentally, her 17th birthday as well.

How lucky we are to have her with us, and so hale and hearty. Madelena is a miracle, as we were able to get her diagnosis in an earlier stage of her disease, MLD, and she was able to survive the transplant process.

It has been a roller coaster ride and for a long time, we haven't been sure of her prognosis. After her transplant, she was having seizures, and an array of psychological problems from the disease and the medications she was taking. But that wasn't all, we still had to worry about the physical deterioration due to the disease. Her ability to walk and balance has been precarious these last three years, but we are now seeing steady improvement.

Marijuana growers, like one Costa Mesa company, find their hot spot in the desert

Medical marijuana is shown inside a greenhouse in Mendocino County. Costa Mesa-based CalConn Holdings wants to build a similar facility in Desert Hot Springs.

Out in Coachella Valley, in the small city of Desert Hot Springs, there’s plenty of land and sunshine. What’s missing is industry, along with the jobs and tax revenue those businesses bring.

So city officials welcomed the announcement Jan. 26 that CalCann Holdings planned to set up shop and build a greenhouse to grow some 6,000 pounds of organic medical cannabis each year.

The pot will go to the Costa Mesa company’s own Santa Ana dispensaries and others under a new state licensing system.

California Medical Association backs recreational pot plan

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's largest organization of practicing physicians, the California Medical Association, announced Monday that it is backing a proposed 2016 ballot initiative to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

A coalition of entrepreneurs, activists, environmentalists and state politicians are backing the initiative, led by billionaire technology investor Sean Parker.

CMA said in a statement that its members believe controlling, tracking and studying pot will better protect public health than "ineffective prohibition."

Spokeswoman Molly Weedn said the medical association is most interested in provisions of the proposal that would expand marijuana research.

Medical Marijuana Inc, a pioneer in the industrial hemp business, is betting on Mexico as its next big market as the country opens up to the import of some cannabis-derived products for medical use.

The California-based company manufactures a hemp oil which can, under permits granted this week, be imported to Mexico for the first time to treat specific medical cases. It already supplies a similar product to Brazil.
