No Respite for Aurora Cannabis Investors

stock down

While broader markets recovered in 2021, Aurora Cannabis (TSX:ACB)(NYSEQ:ACB) stock kept digging deeper.

Aurora Cannabis investors must be hoping for a massive recovery after such underperformance for months. During the cannabis legalization rally in Canada, ACB stock delivered more than 2,000% returns between 2016 and 2018. However, it was quick to lose sheen too. The stock lost 96% of its market value in the last three years from its all-time highs.

An increasing acceptance of cannabis globally could open up more growth opportunities for the sector. Also, cannabis derivatives like vapes and beverages offer attractive prospects in the future. However, excess capacity and rampant black markets have been crucial factors that have plagued the industry.

Budding risks in the cannabis sector

cannabis

Since the legalization of cannabis in 2018, Canadian retailers have been pushed to come up with holistic strategies to protect themselves. With more cannabis dispensaries and delivery services open for business, risks have grown.

“The largest risks to date from a claims perspective are theft, vandalism and water damage,” said Marcus Sargent, VP and client executive of healthcare, life sciences and cannabis at BFL Canada.

“Regulators have done a good job mandating a certain level of security; however, I’ve started to see a deterioration in the quality of security, specifically with new stores.”
