BCCLA calls for regulation of edible pot, says feds have failed industry

Canada's Supreme Court ruled June 11 that all forms of medical marijuana are legal

Public hearings continue in Vancouver over the regulation of pot dispensaries around the city.

A public hearing on regulating Vancouver's pot dispensaries continues tonight. The city of Vancouver is trying to establish a set of rules and guidelines to oversee the booming but illegal industry.

Vancouver city staff want to outlaw edible forms of marijuana because they are unregulated and they say some of them, like brownies or candies, can appeal to kids. The BC Civil Liberties Association disagrees.

Barrie poised to sell property to marijuana producer

Politicians will discuss selling some land tonight to enable a medical marijuana plant to grow in the city.

City economic development staff has negotiated a $600,000 agreement for a 4.8-acre industrial site on Rawson Avenue.

Skytek Pharmaceuticals is proposing to invest $7 million in Barrie, partially to build a 65,000-square-foot building, which would house a production and research facility at 36 to 48 Rawson Ave.

The site is in the South Barrie Industrial Park, south of Mapleview Drive and east of Hwy. 400.

“It’s in an area we thought it would be. It’s industrial,” said Coun. John Brassard, who chairs the city’s infrastructure, investment and development services committee.

Hemp nanosheets could be better than graphene for making the ideal supercapacitor

As hemp makes a comeback in the U.S. after a decades-long ban on its cultivation, scientists are reporting that fibers from the plant can pack as much energy and power as graphene, long-touted as the model material for supercapacitors, according to David Mitlin, Ph.D.

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that have huge potential to transform the way future electronics are powered. Unlike today’s rechargeable batteries, which sip up energy over several hours, supercapacitors can charge and discharge within seconds. But they normally can’t store nearly as much energy as batteries, an important property known as energy density.

Canadian Commonsense vs. American Reefer Madness

Canada has seen the light. In the game of who can move past marijuana propaganda the fastest, Canada just drew a “move 5 spaces card”, while the U.S. keeps picking “lose a turn”.

Last week, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that access to cannabis-infused products, including cookies and brownies, are a patient’s right. They further declared that these products are a necessary and less harmful alternative to smoking for many patients, especially children. The court stated that, "Inhaling marihuana can present health risks and is less effective for some conditions than administration of cannabis derivative."

Website to Warn Women About Marijuana in Pregnancy

Indiegogo Campaign: Needed to build website and create youtube video on why it is not good to use marijuana in pregnancy

U.S. scientists brace for ‘marijuana meltdown’ as laws ease

WASHINGTON – The only marijuana available for research in the U.S. is locked down by federal regulators who are more focused on studies to keep people off the drug than helping researchers learn how it might be beneficial.

Marijuana is a trend that “will peak like tobacco, then people will see their error,” said Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which serves as the gatekeeper for U.S. marijuana research through its oversight of a pot farm that grows the only plants that can be used in clinical trials.

Marijuana advocates say NIDA’s control over research has restricted their ability to test the drug against ailments such as pain, cancer-related nausea and epilepsy.

Cannabis in Canada: A Data Snapshot

The evolution of the cannabis market in Canada continues to be a crucial case study. There is a lot we can learn about how business models are taking shape and the headwinds being faced in the legalized medical environment that the Canadian MMPR provides.

Visual Capitalist recently released a report that takes a snapshot of the current MMPR market at the end of April. The combination of surveys, reviews, and independent data collection is a launching point for a look at Canada’s licensed producers, its patients, and the current product offerings for consumers.

Marijuana IS Addictive

I just wrote and sent a letter to Vancouver's mayor and council members, as well as to our education minister and I'm sharing it here.

In Vancouver, medical marijuana clinics have been popping up by the dozens. However, the ease of obtaining marijuana has resulted in it being used and abused by those who don't need it for medicinal reasons, and now many families are dealing with the ramifications of marijuana addiction in their children.

If you would like to write letters of your own to your elected officials and to those who educate your children, I strongly urge you to do so. Your voice needs to be heard.
