Justin Trudeau has said he intends to waste no time ending the prohibition of marijuana if he’s elected as the country’s next prime minister later this year.

In a March 15 interview with CKNW, the leader of the Liberal party told Gord MacDonald he would take immediate action to decriminalize the drug.

“Will you bring forth legislation to do that in the first session of Parliament when Justin Trudeau is prime minister?” MacDonald asked.

HALIFAX – Medical marijuana users are calling on Halifax police to stop investigating people who need and use the product.

Bob Dillman injured his back and the medication he was prescribed destroyed his immune system. He says he gets some relief from using cannabis and a strict diet. He had a federal exemption to use cannabis, but it expired in February 2014.

Dillman and his wife were charged with possession of cannabis in early March 2015, but those charges have now been dropped.

As the once-vilified drug becomes more accepted, researchers around the world are trying to understand how it works and how it might fight disease.

There’s nothing new about cannabis, of course. It’s been around humankind pretty much forever.

In Siberia charred seeds have been found inside burial mounds dating back to 3000 B.C. The Chinese were using cannabis as a medicine thousands of years ago. Marijuana is deeply American too—as American as George Washington, who grew hemp at Mount Vernon. For most of the country’s history, cannabis was legal, commonly found in tinctures and extracts.

It had been a bad day for Tuan Anh Nguyen when, bruised and bleeding, he picked up his phone and dialed 911.

Little did he realize his day was about to get much worse.

Nguyen, 46, had a small marijuana grow operation in the basement of his McKay Avenue home. Police found it when they responded to his 911 call.

The man quickly went from being considered the victim of a violent crime, to being a criminal himself.

Making cannabis coffee is now as simple as inserting a pod and pushing a button.

In Seattle, Uncle Ike’s Pot Shop sells pods of Catapult “premium infused coffee” for $10 each. The pods work in standard, single-serve coffee makers and contain 10 mg of THC, a quantity of marijuana's active ingredient that's becoming something of a standard serving for marijuana edibles.

“I liken it to a Red Bull and vodka,” Uncle Ike’s sales manager Jennifer Lanzador said. “I had more energy, but I still had the relaxation you get from cannabis.” 

A Saskatoon-area marijuana lounge has shuttered its doors, but its owner says the closure won't stop him from pushing for legalization, even if accomplishing that goal means giving it away himself.

Jeffrey Lundstrom, owner and operator of The Lounge in the Loft, said representatives from the city's community services branch, the fire department and Saskatoon Health Region requested access to the property for inspection purposes on May 11.

Rather than grant entry to the business, he instead chose to close it down permanently.

"They were very persistent about the inspection.

My basic thoughts on it were that this is the first stage of them attempting to push my business out," Lundstrom said.

Canada’s bring your own marijuana vapor lounge scene is experiencing impressive growth. Originally a metropolitan city phenom, bring your pot lounges have opened in smaller Canadian communities with great success.

Until recently lounges were a Toronto thing because our politicians and police presumably had better things to do. When conservative city councilor Mark Grimes did request a report on bring your weed lounges, a City of Toronto staff investigation determined lounges were actually Medical Marihuana Inhalation Facilities that had few police problems.

Not exactly what Grimes was seeking.

Two companies ready to produce medical marijuana, but one has laid off staff.

Two major medical marijuana facilities are nearing completion in Kincardine and Hanover -- and both are waiting for the final go-ahead to start production -- but one company has now laid off staff.

In the Kincardine area, AMMCan or Advanced Medical Marijuana Canada has spent over five million dollars preparing the facility at the Bruce Energy Centre off Bruce Road 20 near Lake Huron.

However, President Peter Herburger says the company has been waiting for several months to go to the next step, which would be production of marijuana.

Because the company has been waiting so long, AMMCan has now laid off 15 workers and the executives are staying on the job without any pay.
