Hemp food touted for health benefits

Consumers have a wide selection of hemp based food and cosmetics, but regulations and scientific information have not kept up.

Commercial hemp production was not allowed for many years because it was confused with other types of cannabis, and authorities did not want products with high levels of the intoxicant tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), said Daniel Kruse of Hemp International in Germany, which sells seeds, hulled nuts, oil, cosmetics and hemp garments.

Canada lifted its ban in 1998 with a set of regulations on allowable limits of THC. The European Union also allows hemp cultivation, but there are inconsistencies across the region when it comes to THC levels in food products.

Germany To Create Cannabis Agency

This is big news for medical marijuana in Germany.

Germany may soon join the ranks of many other countries and states within the United States by adopting a policy that would allow for the wide use of medical cannabis to alleviate pain. The German Drug Commissioner Marlene Mortler announced that Germany will be aiming to set up a Cannabis Agency to regulate cannabis use in a medical setting.

This would not allow for patients to grow the plant on their own, but would grant access to those in need. Likely, companies will be certified to grow cannabis and then distribute to patients, which is currently what is happening in Canada.

Germany mulls state cannabis body for pain relief

Germany's government has plans to set up a pharmaceutical agency to regulate the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes, according to a media report. Such a step could make the drug more accessible to ill people.

A so-called cannabis agency has been proposed in draft legislation put forward by the federal health ministry, the "Welt am Sonntag" newspaper reported on Sunday.

The bill was reportedly awaiting approval from the office of Chancellor Angela Merkel. As outlined in the draft, the new state-owned body would be tasked with regulating the price of medicinal hemp and making sure the drug was grown and sold purely for pharmaceutical purposes. Patients in need of pain relief would not be allowed to grow their own cannabis plants.
