Illinois Approves 1st Medical Marijuana Workers

Sunlight streaming through a glass roof in a rural warehouse will likely soon be feeding one of Illinois' first legal crops of marijuana seedlings.

The company that owns the warehouse, PharmaCann LLC, is preparing for a final inspection from state regulators Tuesday. Once that is secured, along with IDs for workers who have passed background checks, Illinois' fledgling medical marijuana industry will finally be able to get down to business — growing pot — nearly two years since a change in state law made it legal and after a series of hiccups in the rollout that followed.

People substitute alcohol for marijuana at age 21, study says

Alcohol seems to act as a substitute for marijuana when people hit the minimum legal drinking age, a recent study found.

The study, published in the Journal of Health Economics, found — perhaps not surprisingly — that alcohol consumption spikes among people just over the age of 21. But it also found that marijuana use experienced a substantial drop at the same age.

The finding is important to the debate about public policy to regulate the substances. As economic substitutes, how strictly marijuana laws are enforced would affect alcohol use — and vice versa — because people will tend to use whichever substance is cheapest or more available.

Grateful Dead: only three marijuana arrests at Chicago farewell shows

Are Grateful Dead fans unmellowing in their old age? The veteran jam band’s three farewell shows at Soldier Field in Chicago this weekend attracted 210,000 fans, yet only three of them were charged with possession of marijuana, despite what the Chicago Sun-Times described as “a pungent fog of marijuana smoke” in the stadium.

It turns out, though, that’s not the result of Dead fans eschewing rolling papers and weed, but the result of a hands-off approach by Chicago police. Their stance was at least partly dictated by a bout of gun violence in the city over the weekend, in which seven people were killed and 40 shot.
