Addressing the 50th anniversary annual general meeting of the Jamaica Exporters’ Association, Dr Lowe pointed out that successful societies, such as Singapore, USA and Germany, have used science and technology, not only for the goods and services they produce, but also to establish quality and standardisation for their domestic and export industries.

Jamaica proposes marijuana dispensers for tourists at airports following legalisation

Jamaica is planning to install marijuana-dispensing kiosks for tourists in order to regulate a growing drug market and to bring in more government revenue.

The new Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) is drawing up plans for the kiosks just two months after small amounts of the drug were finally legalized in a country where marijuana has long been part of the culture.

“We've had our first meeting, and my thinking is that we'd need a few weeks to turn out an appropriate policy document,” said Winston De La Haye, chairman of the medical committee of the CLA, as reported by the Jamaica Gleaner.

Jamaica: MoBay Ganja Farmer Unhappy With CLA

At least one western Jamaica-based ganja farmer has come out openly in challenging what he says is the Cannabis Licensing Authority's (CLA) lack of readiness to preside over a properly regulated legal ganja and hemp industry.

During a recent town hall meeting in Montego Bay, officials of the CLA were taken to task by businessman Orville Powell, after he was told that the authority did not have a blueprint on how to export ganja, and were also unaware of any importers who were waiting in the wings to do business with local ganja farmers.

Ganja ATMs To Launch In Jamaica?

If the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) has its way, Jamaica's air and seaports will have kiosks or dedicated desks where visitors can pick up a licence to sample some of the 'good herb' to enhance their island experience.

The CLA is already looking at the framework for the operation of the entities.

"We've had our first meeting, and my thinking is that we'd need a few weeks to turn out an appropriate policy document," reported chairman of the Medical Committee of the CLA, Dr Winston De La Haye.

Speaking at a recent Gleaner Editors' Forum on Jamaica's burgeoning ganja industry, De La Haye said the country needs to move quickly to plug any potential gap in proper regulations for that.

Jamaica: Ganja industry not a magic wand

The limited decriminalisation of ganja has spawned a number of misconceptions about the herb, which is still illegal in Jamaica, with many local and foreign investors already anxiously anticipating the millions they intend to make from this emerging industry.

"We know the economics. In Colorado (United States) last year, even though that's recreational but it also includes medical, they sold about US$1 billion worth of marijuana and collected US$135 million in taxes and fees for the state alone, with a population of five million plus," Delano Seiveright, a member of the Cannabis Commercial and Medicinal Research task force, told a Gleaner Editors' Forum recently.
