ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A new survey shows many doctors in Minnesota have been reluctant to accept medical marijuana as a treatment option.

The survey was released Tuesday to the state's Task Force on Medical Cannabis Therapeutic Research. It was conducted by task force member Dr. Charles Reznikoff, who sought opinions on medical marijuana from 262 doctors from four institutions who practice across Minnesota.

the majority of doctors in the survey said qualifying conditions need to be clearer. Many said they don't want to be burdened by the program, are nervous about registering patients and worry about it at a time when so many people are abusing opioids.

Minnesota doctors are slow to accept medical cannabis as a treatment option for lack of scientific evidence, fear of addiction and lack of educational programs, according to a new survey released to a state task force Tuesday.

Dr. Charles Reznikoff, a member of the Task Force on Medical Cannabis Therapeutic Research, the group responsible for gathering information about the program, conducted the survey. Reznikoff is an addiction specialist who practices at Hennepin County Medical Center. He sought opinions of 262 doctors from four institutions who practice all across the state.

A Minnesota medical marijuana company has developed a potent new strain it hopes will help patients, and help drive down prices.

Minnesota Medical Solutions announced Wednesday that it has bred a new strain of cannabis that is rich in cannabidiol, or CBD — a nonintoxicating compound used to treat seizures and inflammation. Because CBD is found in lower ratios in most marijuana varieties, the company hopes its new high-CBD strain will make its products easier and cheaper to refine.

“This is potentially a huge cost saver,” said Dr. Kyle Kingsley, CEO of MinnMed and its parent company, Vireo Health.

That, combined with the stories from people suffering from constant pain, ultimately outweighed the medical community’s concerns that there’s not enough evidence to use medical marijuana to treat pain.

Minnesota legislators in 2014 approved using products of the marijuana plant for nine specific health issues, but left the decision about whether intractable pain – severe pain that otherwise can not be treated – up to the health commissioner.
