MLAs, liquor commission have different ideas about what's required to sell cannabis

MLAs have been told liquor stores need two entrances in order to sell the drug.

With a cannabis legalization only months away, some N.W.T. MLAs and regulators are saying different things about what will be required for liquor stores in the territory to sell the drug.

Over the past 11 days, MLAs travelled to 16 communities to get feedback on the territorial government's proposed Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, or Bill 6.

But instead of people voicing their opinions about the regulations, they asked more questions.

N.W.T. defence lawyer on what legalized cannabis will mean for justice system

'I have never seen a fight associated with cannabis,' says lawyer Peter Harte.

As N.W.T. draft legislation for the legalization of cannabis is under review, many have wondered how it will affect the criminal justice system and policing.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau renewed his promise Thursday that recreational cannabis use will be legal by summer. The N.W.T.'s Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, or Bill 6, is currently under review.

Cannabis a business opportunity for Yellowknifers, consultation meeting hears

MLA Shane Thompson says communities want more distribution options.

MLAs made their final stop in a string of public consultations on draft cannabis legislation Thursday in Yellowknife, and some residents echoed concerns that have been brought up on previous stops over the last two weeks.

"This is a chance for business development," said Caroline Wawzonek, a lawyer and director with the N.W.T. Chamber of Commerce. She said the chamber doesn't want distribution to be limited to liquor stores.

Students 'brutally honest' to MLAs during cannabis tour, despite meagre turnout in Inuvik

MLAs completed whirlwind tour of 17 communities in 11 days Thursday.

Northwest Territories MLAs have made it a priority to speak with students on their whirlwind cannabis consultation tour around the territory, though only a couple of students took them up on the offer during their stop in Inuvik.

Just two students from East Three Secondary School took the chance to discuss cannabis legalization with leaders Thursday morning. The legislative committee, consisting of a group of regular MLAs, are visiting 17 communities in 11 days as they take stock of the territory's ideas and attitudes toward impending cannabis legalization.

Nuhami Gabeyehu, 15, was one of the students.

Sahtu chiefs disappointed after being 'shot down' on cannabis ownership proposal

Liquor stores will be the ones to sell cannabis, N.W.T. government proposal says.

Some Sahtu chiefs in the Northwest Territories are disappointed the territorial government won't let their First Nations sell cannabis when it becomes legalized.

Colville Lake Chief Wilbert Kochon said he and other leaders in the region had a property in Norman Wells lined up last year from which they could sell pot once it became legal. They wanted to sell cannabis and "have a little control over what's going to be coming into our communities," Kochon said to CBC.

But it doesn't look like that plan will become a reality.

"We were shot down right away," said Wilfred McNeely Jr., chief of the K'asho Got'ine Community Council.

The Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, or Bill 6, is currently under review by the standing committees on social development and government operations.

NWT communities not ready for legal marijuana, says Sahtu MLA

There are more questions than answers as the Government of the Northwest Territories readies itself to introduce new cannabis legislation within the year, in light of federal marijuana legalization.

But one thing is certain for Danny McNeely, MLA for the Sahtu.

"They're not ready," McNeely said. "There has never been any community consultation other than social media articles that have been exposed via the paper, or other means, [like] on Facebook."

What about prohibition?

Some small communities in the N.W.T. have strict alcohol prohibitions or restrictions in place.

How Will Legalization Impact Canada's Northern Territories?

Most of the discussion around legalization has been centered on the provinces, but how will it affect the northern territories differently?

When the government begins to digest the marijuana legalization task force’s report, the feedback they will be reading will come from numerous stakeholders — from individual citizens, to activist groups, health professionals, and municipal, provincial, and territorial governments, to name a few.

We’ve covered a lot of issues arising from many of these groups, but we’ve not yet discussed in  depth the issues facing Canada’s territories.
