Two of the largest Mi'kmaw communities in Nova Scotia are taking different approaches to cannabis.

Membertou is planning to regulate private dispensaries, while Eskasoni is leaving the oversight and sales of cannabis up to the province.

Last year, Eskasoni had been thinking about opening its own dispensary, but decided against it.

Instead, the band has signed a five-year deal with the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp., to open provincially regulated alcohol and cannabis outlets on reserve.

Cannabis sales up roughly 20 per cent as legal market cuts into illicit trade

Falling cannabis prices are taking a bite out of the illicit market in Nova Scotia, according to the province's official cannabis retailer. 

"The whole intent of legalization was to make an impact on the illicit market," said Bev Ware, a spokesperson for the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp.

Ware said the average price of a single gram of marijuana in Nova Scotia now stands at $6.50, down by nearly 40 per cent since legalization in 2018. 

But it's a stable supply of one-ounce packages of cannabis, some selling for as low as $110, "that helps compete with the illicit market," Ware said.  

"They have served their country, and we are proud to serve them."

Aqualitas Inc., a Nova Scotia-based licensed producer, is launching a new service aimed at educating, assisting, and onboarding veterans from across Canada into the company’s online medical cannabis platform.

Halifax,N.S.—Nova Scotians continue to buy more pot from liquor stores, as the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation expands its cannabis network.

The NSLC says cannabis sales were up by more than 20 percent last quarter, compared to the previous year. In total, the crown corporation sold $26.6-million worth of cannabis between July 5 and October 3.

Of that, $5.5-million was pot produced in Nova Scotia.

That’s a jump in local cannabis sales of more than 31 percent compared to the same period last year. That makes local cannabis the fastest-growing product category at the NSLC.

NSLC President and CEO Greg Hughes says increasing pot sales are due in part to the falling cost of cannabis at the company’s stores.

Canadian grocery chain operator Empire Co. is taking its first formal steps to provide cannabis access to its pharmacy customers after announcing a partnership with Pathway Health Corp. to develop a medical marijuana program. 

Pathway will provide pharmacists who work for Empire's pharmacy businesses across a network of grocery chains that include Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, and FreshCo with a certified online training program to educate them on how medical cannabis can be prescribed to patients. 

Pathway will also provide Empire's pharmacists with a management system that can offer medical cannabis assessments to patients and connect them with a physician for further evaluation through either physical or virtual care.
