Dr. Adie Poe Believes Cannabis is America's Best Weapon in the Fight Against Opioid Abuse

The co-founder of the Portland-based cannabis research organization Habu Health will speak at this week's Cultivation Classic.

When Dr. Adie Poe looks at a cannabis plant, she doesn't see what most people see. What she sees are hundreds of bioactive molecules with the potential to create infinite experiences in the human body.

A global leader in opioid and cannabis research, Dr. Poe has studied the neuroscience of opioid/cannabinoid interactions for more than a decade, beginning with her undergraduate and graduate studies at Washington State University in both Pullman and Vancouver. Her work is consistently funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and has received numerous awards in search of treatments for debilitating diseases such as chronic pain.

Pot Money: Oregon Hasn't Released Any Revenue Generated from Legal Weed Sales

Oregon is sitting on millions of dollars generated from legal pot sales, with its booming marijuana industry having grossed nearly $75 million since the start of 2016. However, none of the entities that were supposed to receive funding under the marijuana law have seen a dime since the state started collecting tax money from recreational pot sales, according to Oregon’s KWG News.

OMBC to Cover Marijuana Testing as Deadline Approaches

There are certainly several disputes and controversies within the Oregon cannabis industry and community, but none greater than marijuana testing standards. Last October, stringent testing guidelines went into place, making Oregon regulated cannabis “safer than food.” The standards for Oregon cannabis were so high, that reports surfaced that a vast majority of California cannabis on the shelves at local dispensaries would fail Oregon’s pesticide testing standards.  However, those strict standards created shortages and price increases throughout the Oregon market, especially for edibles and extracts.

Oregon winery sues to block marijuana grow

A winery and another property owner in Yamhill County, Oregon, filed a lawsuit to prevent a neighbor from growing marijuana on their farmland. The suit seeks an injunction from a judge due to the odor that can associated with cannabis cultivation, and the susceptibility of the wine grapes to be possibly altered in some manner by those odoriferous emanations. The owners also asked the county to reverse their approval of a marijuana processing facility on the Exclusive Farm Use (EFU) zoned land.

The buzz on cannabis-infused honey

Sometimes, there’s no better language in which to say something than ancient Latin, and going back even further, ancient Greek. Take the word “electuary.” It’s actually from the Latin word “electuarium” and the ancient Greek “ekleikton,” meaning “medicine which is licked away.” Specifically, an electuary refers to medicinal herbs — and in this case, cannabis oil — mixed with honey. It also speaks to the ancient relationship that humans have with honey.

The Martha Stewart of Marijuana Edibles

Last fall, the food writer Laurie Wolf invited me to a dinner party at her home. It promised to be a master class in rustic entertaining. Wolf lives in a floating house on the Willamette River, just south of Portland, Oregon. When she has people over, she told me, she has a few rules for herself. First, “have as much done in advance as possible.” She goes so far as to set the table the night before and put out serving platters with sticky notes assigning their contents. Next, be sure to check your guests’ dietary requirements. These days, everybody has a health concern or a food allergy, and she says, “I always try to accommodate in a big way.” Some of Wolf’s recommendations are more esoteric.

American High: State-by-State Guide to Legal Pot

While Congress has largely refused to roll back, or even debate, the federal prohibition on pot, local voters across the U.S. have cast ballots to end the war on marijuana. But the nation's patchwork of pot laws can be confusing – even in the states where it's allowed – so here's a blueprint of what you can and can't do in the eight states (plus D.C.) where weed's been legalized for recreational use.

Seven Portland Cannabis Trends We’re Excited About Right Now

There’s a lot of cool stuff going on in the Oregon cannabis world right now.

It's been a rough year for the cannabis industry. Between tough new local laws, higher taxes and the appointment of staunchly anti-weed Russian operative Jefferson Beauregard "Jeff" Sessions III as the nation's top lawyer, things are a little…tense.

You know what helps with tension? Weed.

There's a lot of cool stuff going on in the Oregon cannabis world right now.  Here are the seven trends and products we're most stoked about.

10 best 4/20 sites: Where marijuana history was made

While it’s not yet on calendars, April 20 has become the unofficial holiday of marijuana, particularly in the growing number of states where pot has been decriminalized for recreational use. “It has become hugely celebrated,” says Brett Konen, an editor with Seattle-based Leafly.com, which calls itself the world’s largest cannabis information source. The Trump administration has indicated it may crack down on marijuana, but the industry continues to grow for now. Konen shares cannabis culture hotspots with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.
