Medical vs. recreational cannabis: Where should I invest?

It’s an exciting time to be a cannabis investor!

The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF (OTC: HMLSF) is obliterating the broader markets…

Year to date, the exchange-traded fund has more than doubled the performance of tech stocks and blue chips.

But I think its run is far from over. There are plenty of catalysts on the horizon. We have pro-cannabis legislation – like the STATES Act and the SAFE Banking Act – inching its way forward in Congress.

Aurora Cannabis' backdoor strategy for entering the U.S. market

Aurora Cannabis' (NYSE:ACB) growing cannabis empire spans five continents. The company operates in two dozen countries. But the U.S. isn't one of them.

The problem with Aurora's lack of a U.S. presence is straightforward. Currently, nearly 80% of the world's total legal marijuana sales are made in the United States.

That amount will decline as the Canadian adult-use recreational marijuana market and international medical cannabis markets pick up steam, but the U.S. is likely to dominate global marijuana sales for a long time to come.

Canada turns to the U.S. to solve cannabis shortage

Canadian lawmakers have been batting around the idea of creating another cross border trade deal with the U.S. But this deal wouldn’t be for steel or wheat or cars. It would be for marijuana—that is at some point in the future, if Washington DC lawmakers ever get around to ending 80 years of federal prohibition.

The issue stems from Canada’s supply and demand problem. Demand for legal marijuana has been high since Canada became the first G7 country to legalize cannabis, but the supply has been falling short.

Meanwhile, an export deal could be a godsend in U.S. states such as Oregon, where they say they’re sitting on about a six-year supply of cannabis flower.

Another Canadian marijuana stock is about to start trading in the U.S.

Organigram Holdings Inc. sold the second-most amount of recreational cannabis in Canada, after only Canopy Growth Corp. , in the most recent quarter. It sold twice as much pot as rival Aphria Inc. That success isn’t showing up in Organigram’s (ticker: OGRMF) valuation, though—the market cap is 5% of Canopy’s (ticker: CGC, WEED) and half of Aphria’s (ticker: APHA), according to FactSet data.

NEO scores first billion-dollar listing with U.S. pot firm Columbia Care

The upstart NEO Exchange scored its first billion-dollar corporate listing today with U.S. medical cannabis producer Columbia Care.

The New-York based cultivator, manufacturer and dispensary operator made its debut with a market capitalization of more than $2-billion.

The stock exchange said Monday the multi-state operator, with a presence in roughly 15 states, is the first company to list on the NEO with an enterprise value of over $1 billion.

"This is an exciting time to be partnering with a leader in the U.S. cannabis sector as it moves into its next phase and looks to raise capital on the North American public markets," NEO chief executive Jos Schmitt said in a statement.

Columbia Care trades under the symbol CCHW.

Cannabis oversupply in Oregon as Canada faces shortages

Since the legalization of cannabis, companies and stores opt to produce and sell weed products to cater to a lot of users. This massive growth of producers is observable in different states including Oregon, which leads to the oversupply of cannabis.

At present, Oregon contains pot products that will take up to seven years for users to consume it. While it looks like a positive note, cannabis growers and companies see this event as a problem.

The issuing of a license to grow cannabis would be the closest to why it overproduces. Oregon state issued over 1000 licenses to different cultivators and companies as compared to Canada’s meager 138 producers.
