Donald Trump may have won the US presidency, but in six of the nine states that were asked to decide on marijuana legalization on election day, more people actually voted for weed than voted for Trump himself. And with medical marijuana now available in more countries than ever before, the coming years could see a massive explosion in cannabis research across the globe.

The future for legal pot and drug reform is very much in doubt.

As 2016 comes to a tumultuous end, we look back on the year in drugs and drug policy. It’s definitely a mixed bag, with some major victories for drug reform, especially marijuana legalization, but also some major challenges, especially around heroin and prescription opioids, and the threat of things taking a turn for the worse next year.

Here are the six biggest stories from the year on drugs.

1. Marijuana legalization wins big

If I told you that your body is worthy of love, care, and compassion exactly the way it is right this second, would you believe me? If you’re suddenly squirming uncomfortably or rolling your eyes, the odds are you probably aren’t completely comfortable with your body. You’re not alone. A 2012 UK study conducted by the All Party Parliamentary Group found that “roughly two-thirds of adults suffer from negative body image.” Yes, all adults. This is not just a “women’s issue.” People of all genders struggle with body image.

Nevadans have the opportunity in November to vote on whether to legalize recreational marijuana.

RENO — Thousands of medical marijuana agent applications for people looking to run a dispensary were exposed online, according to a statement from the Nevada Division of Public Behavioral Health.

In a statement sent Wednesday evening, the state said it was investigating a "cyber-attack" on its Medical Marijuana Program database that affected medical marijuana agent cards, disclosing the Social Security numbers and other identifiable information for employees and owners of medical marijuana establishments. The state said no private medical marijuana patient information was disclosed.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — More medical marijuana dispensaries are expected to open next year in Michigan. A set of bills signed by Gov. Rick Snyder have made dispensaries and production of edibles legal.

You may remember recent raids that shut down medical marijuana dispensaries in West Michigan. The new state laws will let people apply for a license to legally grow and sell marijuana.

Rep. Mike Callton, R-Nashville, is behind the three bills that create the licensing and regulatory framework for medical marijuana.

“It’s going to create more jobs, it’s going to generate some tax revenue for the state and municipalities,” said Callton.

As the movement to legalize marijuana goes mainstream, an increasing number of celebrities are stepping out of the cannabis closet. Some are looking for ways to cash in.

Entertainers including Snoop Dogg and Miley Cyrus have lent their names to marijuana strains, edibles, and weed-infused bath soaks.

Premium marijuana brands fetch high prices. An analysis by Marijuana Business Daily found that celebrity-branded strains are marked up 24% on average, generating $5 to $10 more per eighth of an ounce of pot. In an era when most strains are given arbitrary names like "Maui Wowie" and "Pineapple Express," new users might favor the weed their favorite singer trusts.

Closer inspection revealed 260 packages filled with high-grade marijuana. They called the cops, who laid in wait for the shipment’s recipient, one Steven Yang.

Yang would plead guilty to first-degree drug possession with intent to sell 258 pounds. At his sentencing this month, his attorney, Sia Lo, told the judge his 27-year-old client had no criminal record of any kind, and was currently caring for a disabled brother and his father.

Yang said his giant failed pot deal was “one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life.”

Judge Gina Brandt rubbed it in: “Mr. Yang, I hope this was the worst mistake you ever made.”

Yang received a 74-month sentence. With good behavior, he’ll be out around New Year’s Day, 2021.

The odd couple's hit TV show already has 3-million viewers.

VH1's new hit show, "Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party," pairs Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg in a celebrity cooking show, which on the surface appears to be a very strange choice.

However, if you ask the show's producer, SallyAnn Salsano, the pairing is far from random. In fact, she believes the move is actually brilliant.
