Marijuana and Private Prison Reform Touted on HillaryClinton.com

Hillary Clinton’s campaign has posted “133 reasons (and counting!) Hillary Clinton should be our next president” on HillaryClinton.com and a couple of the reasons on the list pertain to the cannabis community and greater Drug War reform activists. The presidential election could very well tighten up as we head to November 8th and Secretary Clinton would be wise to tout her criminal justice reforms or, better yet, announce even more progressive positions.

5 Cannabis Stocks to Invest in Before Election Day

After Nov. 8, when voters in nine states will consider some form of cannabis legalization, the cannabis stock investment market may explode. If you’re feeling like you’d like to get in on the ground floor, consider Nov. 9 the day the street-level doors will be barred.

Want to jump in now? Be careful. Investors are already rushing into the market. Marijuana-related equities have, on average, more than doubled in price since September 1. Many of those stocks are extremely volatile, however, and may plummet just as quickly as they’ve risen.

After Election Day, Access to Marijuana Likely to Reach All-Time High Across Nation

Nearly 60 million Americans may wake up Nov. 9 to find voters in their states have abolished long-standing marijuana prohibitions, a three-fold expansion for legal cannabis across the country.

Another 24 million Americans could find themselves in states with newly legal medical marijuana use, a smaller but still significant expansion of legalized pot around the United States. Already, half of the states permit some form of medical marijuana use, and more than half of all Americans live in a state that has approved medical marijuana.

Cannabis Could Enhance Your Night Vision

Study finds it boosts activity in cells that transmit light information from the eyes to brain.

Over the last few decades, researchers have noted numerous reports of fishermen and mountain dwellers in Jamaica and Morocco who appear to have improved night vision after ingesting cannabis.

Now, a new study has linked increased levels of cannabinoids, the active agent in marijuana, to enhanced low-light vision in vertebrates.

While previous studies have suggested cannabinoids reduce neurotransmission, researchers now found that activating this type of signalling in tadpoles instead made the retinal ganglion cells more sensitive.

Pesticides in Marijuana Pose a Growing Problem for Cannabis Consumers

How well do you know your weed? A Berkeley laboratory recently found that 84 percent of medical marijuana samples contained large amounts of pesticides. Steep Hill, a Northern California-based cannabis testing lab, says their findings were much higher than expected and “are cause for concern for California cannabis consumers.”

“Those in the cannabis community who feel that all cannabis is safe are not correct given this data – smoking a joint of pesticide-contaminated cannabis could potentially expose the body to lethal chemicals,” says Jmichaele Keller, president and CEO of Steep Hill. “As a community, we need to address this issue immediately and not wait until 2018.”

The Brain and Marijuana: Chinese and US Researchers Uncover 'Perfect Fit' Behind the Buzz

Chinese and American scientists studying the precise mechanism of how marijuana gets people high have discovered within our brain cells “a pickpocket with three arms”.

The active compound in marijuana, or Cannabis sativa, was discovered in the 1960s, but the exact process of how it produces its narcotics effects on the brain remained largely a mystery.

The study, in this month’s issue of the journal Cell, sheds new light by unveiling, for the first time, the physical structure of human cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), a protein in our brain cell membranes that introduces the narcotic chemicals in marijuana to our brain cells.

The discovery, the researchers say, could lead to new pharmaceuticals with fewer side effects.

Millions More Voters Legalizing Marijuana Won't Clear up Regulatory Haze

Congress continues to resist decriminalizing marijuana even as a popular crusade to legalize its use state by state may soon mean almost a quarter of Americans can smoke up at will, not including the many more who can use the drug medicinally.

This has resulted in a patchwork of state laws alongside federal ones that have put the nascent industry in legal and financial limbo.

Research Suggests Cannabis Is Better For Back Pain Than Opiates

It’s no secret that cannabis can treat pain, but a recent study suggests it can be particularly effective in the treatment of back pain caused by anything from anxiety to injury. Since it’s also proven to be an effective anxiety treatment, it may even reduce anxiety-related back pain and treat both conditions at once. Natural Blaze reports that with studies showing back pain as the leading cause of disability in the world and the leading cause of missed work days in the U.S., a safe and effective treatment is being sought in a way that can’t be provided by addictive opioids.

Tokken Takes on Marijuana Legitimization First, and Then Economic Disenfranchisement

Tokken is a mobile banking app designed to legitimize the way Coloradans pay for weed. Using a custom-built internal banking system based on “tokens,” instead of cash, the company hopes to grow the technology and, eventually, disrupt the global banking system.

For users, Tokken acts as a digital wallet, enabling easy purchasing with on-file cards. But this wallet is different from other popular payment systems, like Venmo or Paypal.

Tokken’s technology converts hard currency to digital tokens, which are used as an accounting tool, linked to U.S. currency.

Dispensaries can choose to leave the money in token form, convert tokens to cash or use them to make other payments.
