EAST ST. LOUIS — The metro-east’s first medical marijuana farm is set to be housed in a vacant U.S. Cellular switching station just south of where Interstate 70 crosses the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge into St. Louis.

At 737 Locust Ave., the site covers 6.7 acres at the end of an unpaved road that stretches nearly half a mile from Illinois 3. The site, which is bounded by railroad tracks on the west and an entry ramp to I-70 under construction to the north, is heavily wooded and home to local wildlife, including turkeys.

Is Rand Paul Good for Legalization?

On Tuesday, April 7, 2015, Sen. Rand Paul officially announced, to no one’s surprise, that he is running for president. Like many contenders, Paul has created a muddy trail on marijuana legalization, but investors would do well to parse through his statements even if only to come up with an agenda that better suits the needs of the legal industry. Candidates may catch up, but they will have to be asked to do so.

Will legalizing pot affect violence in Latin America?

The debate of whether or not to legalize marijuana in the U.S. is not just a national one, Latin American leaders are weighing in on it too.

That’s because U.S. marijuana consumption drives drug violence in their countries.  Armed Honduran military police escort us to the most dangerous neighborhood in San Pedro Sula, a city dubbed the “murder capital of the world.”

The gang comes in and charges every resident a war tax they call it, it’s simply extortion.  Painful choices for residents: Pay the phony tax, leave or face the wrath of the gangs.

Similar fears haunt communities in other Latin American countries also plagued by violent criminal gangs, whose power is connected to the drug trade.

Hemp’s high hurdles

ORLANDO, FLA. — Hemp ingredients may add protein, magnesium, phytosterols and fiber to products, said Tom Vierhile, innovation insights director for Datamonitor Consumer. Hemp is non-allergenic, and the plants are sustainably grown, he added.

Yet many people may associate hemp with marijuana, and that perception could put a buzz-kill on hemp’s entry into food and beverage product launches.

“Hemp is misunderstood,” Mr. Vierhile said in an April 9 presentation at Ingredient Marketplace in Orlando. “That is really one of the key problems with hemp going forward.”

Legal weed might help fill up Portland's new hotel rooms

Travelers who like to toke a little on their adventures may be driving up interest in states that have recently made recreational marijuana legal, including Oregon.

According to the travel website Hotels.com, the legalization of marijuana has helped fire up the number of hotel searches that legal states have seen.

In Colorado in 2014, for example, Denver saw a 73 percent year-over-year increase in hotel searches for check-ins during the weekend of April 20 versus 2013. Hotels.com reported that searches for the same weekend this year were up 60 percent over last year.

New form of marijuana prompts warning from police

ALBANY COUNTY— There is a new form of pot on the block prompting a warning from police.

In the last few months authorities have made a handful of arrests-- including two arrests in Albany County just in the past two weeks-- connected to what is called marijuana wax.

Marijuana wax is a highly-potent form of the drug. Police say it is basically weed on steroids.

“It’s nasty stuff and it's messing people up," Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said. “It’s like 90 percent THC. 90 percent pure."

Depending on how it is cooked it can look like rock candy or peanut brittle. Police say it is often hidden in lip balm containers.

Cannabis kills cancer cells, confirms US government

Marijuana can kill cancer cells, the US government has confirmed.

It is believed that the drug – which is legal in a number of American states – can also shrink some of the most serious types of brain tumours.

The research was carried out by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is funded by the federal government.

Part of a NIDA publication reads: ‘Recent animal studies have shown that marijuana can kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others.

‘Evidence from one animal study suggests that extracts from whole-plant marijuana can shrink one of the most serious types of brain tumors.

‘Research in mice showed that these extracts, when used with radiation, increased the cancer-killing effects of the radiation.’
