lawsuit filed Wednesday takes aim at a fresh Denver ordinance that could shut down dozens of unlicensed nonresidential marijuana-growing collectives by limiting them to growing 36 plants.

The Denver City Council passed the measure 11-0 Monday night. It was proposed by Mayor Michael Hancock’s marijuana office, which says it’s attempting to address unsafe conditions in the unlicensed growing facilities and an “exponential increase” in the cultivation of untracked marijuana.

Hancock signed the bill into law on Tuesday.

But the new limit — which doesn’t apply to licensed commercial grow houses — has drawn protests, in part because of the potential impact on caregivers who grow a large number of plants.

Medical marijuana is coming to Georgia. A bill that would legalize the drug for limited medicinal purposes passed the Georgia House Wednesday and is expected to be signed by Gov. Nathan Deal. Georgia would become the 24th U.S. state to approve the use of medical marijuana.

The use of LEDs to provide specific light wavelengths could allow growers to increase nutritional values of edible crops, enhance the intensity of foliage and flower color and improve the postharvest longevity of ornamental and edible crops.

Research with LEDs has been going on for about 30 years. Only within the last 10 years have increases in the light intensities of LEDs allowed researchers to study the direct effects of narrow wave bands of light on plant physiology.

A bipartisan effort to legalize medical marijuana at the federal level is now underway in both Houses of Congress, and its sponsors acknowledge they face an uphill climb to passage - but they believe the public is on their side.

"Polls show that at least 86 percent of Americans say medical marijuana should be available," said Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tennessee, in an interview with CBS News. "Legislators rarely lead, they generally follow. I guess it's called cultural lag...Eventually, people in Congress start catching up."

Gov. Maggie Hassan said the list of organizations allowed to open medical marijuana treatment centers will soon be finalized and released to the public. One of the centers is likely to be in the southwestern part of the state.

During a recent editorial board meeting at The Sentinel, Hassan said she recognizes that medical marijuana advocates and those seeking relief from debilitating diseases have been waiting patiently for the centers to become a reality.

After N.H. legislators legalized medical marijuana in 2013, the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services was charged with sorting through applicants to open four treatment centers across the state, and developing regulations for the centers.

MONTEVIDEO, Minn. – An eight-year-old girl whose parents worked to pass legislation legalizing medical marijuana in Minnesota has died from a rare neurological disease causing severe seizures.

Katelyn Pauling's death comes just months before medical marijuana becomes available to families in Minnesota, as the first distribution center opens in Minneapolis on July 1.

"She put a face to the kids that are hurting," said Jeremy Pauling, her father. "She changed a lot of people in a lot of different ways, not only at the State Capitol, but our community and kids in our community. I think they will grow up better because of it."

It came down to one vote Tuesday as the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to ban commercial marijuana grows in unincorporated Santa Cruz County.

Before the vote, public comments lasted for more than three hours. Passionate pleas were made on both sides of the debate. 

The Santa Cruz County board chamber was packed with growers, medical marijuana patients, and neighbors who are impacted by illegal and legal marijuana cultivation.

DENVER — Colorado may give up on one of its toughest marijuana problems to emerge in the new market — making sure that edible pot products can’t be confused with regular foods.

A bill up for its first vote Wednesday would repeal a 2014 Colorado requirement requiring pot foods to have a distinct look when out of the packaging. The bill strikes a requirement that edible pot be “clearly identifiable … with a standard symbol indicating that it contains marijuana and is not for consumption by children.”

The sponsor of the measure, Republican Sen. Owen Hill of Colorado Springs, said he’ll suggest an amendment Wednesday to revive the requirement, but not for all foods.

UPDATE: The Georgia Senate passed state Rep. Allen Peake's medical-marijuana bill. It heads back to the House for final approval, expected this week.

The Senate approved just one amendment, which would allow employers to prevent workers from having and using medical marijuana.

Peake told the media Tuesday afternoon that he is "overjoyed" and will work next year to allow medical marijuana to be grown in Georgia.
