People Spend As Much On Legal Weed As They Do On Alcohol

The legal weed industry is dominated by men.

Consumers are reaching for cannabis nearly as often as they are for a can of beer, a new report has found.

The typical male customer spends about $647 annually on marijuana products, while female consumers drop about $634 each year on weed, MarketWatch reported. That’s compared to an average of $645 a year on alcohol and $1,000 a year on coffee, according to a survey from Headset, which tracks weed transactions.

Not For Kids: Washington State Introduces Warning Labels For Edibles

Considering that infused goodies can look identical to normal, kid-friendly snacks, it's important to explain to the little ones why they can't go around snacking on random goodies they find in the house.

Dr. Alexander Garrard, managing director of the Washington Poison Center (WAPC), tells Western Washington news station K5 the center has received in excess of 150 calls about kids accidentally ingesting cannabis products this year.

Why Washington State Should Have Licensed Many More Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Last week, I wrote about how the new medical marijuana system created under the Cannabis Patient Protection Act (SB 5052) shut out many of Washington State's medical marijuana dispensaries. The law required that dispensaries obtain a recreational license to continue operation, but a loophole in the application process created a black market for dispensary employee pay stubs, allowing new actors to game the system. I also mentioned that the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) blindsided applicants by announcing a cap of 222 new licenses late in the application process.

Washington Wants You to Stop Paying Cannabis Taxes in Cash. Good Luck With That.

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board announced several proposed rules on Thursday, and one of them caught us by surprise.

The proposal raised eyebrows for a number of reasons, most notably because of banking restrictions for marijuana businesses. Many banks are unwilling to work with cannabis businesses, so companies in the industry are often forced to deal almost exclusively in cash. Large quantities of cash.In a notice sent to stakeholders this afternoon, the LCB requested public input on a budget proviso requiring electronic payment for marijuana excise tax payments.

Leafly reached out to LCB spokesman Mikhail Carpenter for clarification on the new electronic pay requirement and what it could mean for Washington cannabis businesses.

Washington Poison Center unveils warning label for marijuana edibles

The Washington Poison Center unveiled a new warning label that could be used to prevent children from consuming marijuana edibles.

The poison center received a record-high 272 calls related to marijuana exposures last year, and already has more than 150 calls so far this year. The phone number included on the label is an emergency, confidential helpline.

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board will include the symbol on all edible marijuana products in its draft rules, set to be filed Aug. 10.

"Should the symbol become part of our permanent rules, this will be another important tool in preventing child access to marijuana," WSLCB Chair Jane Rushford said.

How Washington State Screwed Over Its Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

A loophole allowed applicants with no background in medical marijuana to be treated as if they were law-abiding, taxpaying veterans of the industry.

On July 1, when the Cannabis Patient Protection Act (SB 5052) took effect, all dispensaries without an I-502 license were forced to shut down, sending many of the state's medical marijuana patients into a panic. Patients worry that the recreational market doesn't have enough medicinal cannabis for their needs and that what is available is not affordable. Many point to the fact that the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) issued only 222 new retail licenses to replace more than 1,500 medical marijuana dispensaries.

Where the Stoners Are: America's Top 10 Marijuana Using States

Acceptance of marijuana seems to have reached a tipping point in the United States. Four states and the District of Columbia have already legalized it, half the states have medical marijuana laws now (two-thirds if you count the CBD-only states), and as many as a half dozen states, including California, could vote on legalization in November.

Public opinion polls now consistently report majority support for legalization nationwide, and pot is increasingly moving from newspapers' crime pages to the finance and culture sections.

Every kilogram of cultivated marijuana leads to about 4.3 tons of carbon dioxide.

Slowly but surely, medicinal use of cannabis is becoming more widely acceptable across the United States and the world, while states like Colorado and Washington are filling to the brim with luscious and towering grow operations.
