Hemp is very nutritious. For example, there are two fatty acids that are essential for human health — linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) — and hemp seed oil is packed with them.

“In other words, hemp packs a great nutritional punch,” says Ben Raymond, vice-president of research and development for Victory Hemp Foods based in Kentucky.

“That, of course, means we as researchers have a lot of questions. What can we do to improve nutrition? What can we do to improve flavor? Things that you would do with soybean or canola or any other ag commodity, we can do with hemp to make it bigger, faster, cheaper and more nutritious.”

A Manitoba mother says the use of cannabis oil has had a profound impact on the health of her child.

Dr. Jenn Anderson’s son, Nicholas, has epilepsy and is non-verbal. In 2016, he has having multiple seizures each hour.

She said she tried a bottle of cannabinol, or CBD oil, which doesn’t have psychoactive effects. Within two weeks, there has been a change.

“He was alert and alive and able to participate,” Anderson said.

“He was a totally different kid.”

John Fayed and Matt Tkachyk are farmers at heart. They are small town boys with a passion for agriculture and cannabis.

The pair are co-founders of Rogue Botanical, a licensed producer of cannabis-based products based out of Niverville.

Fayed grew up near a tiny town in Manitoba and his family owned a seed plant.

“My dad grew a lot of specialty crops and he’d try out plants that you can’t spray [with pesticides] because you don’t know what would or wouldn’t harm the plants,” Fayed says.

“If you can’t spray, you just have to let everything grow. And to get rid of what you didn’t want in the plot or fields, you would have to walk up and down the field and pull out the weeds. That’s called ‘roguing.’ So our name goes back to our farming roots.”

Other provinces rightly understood they could regulate home cannabis production, but not prohibit: applicant

A lawyer for the Manitoba government says the province is well within its rights to ban the production of homegrown cannabis, even though federal legislation permits it.

Michael Conner said laws which are tougher provincially than federally already exist in some areas, such as imposing penalties for impaired driving beginning with a reading of .05, rather than the .08 prescribed by Ottawa. 

As such, Conner told Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench on Monday, "it shouldn't come as a surprise that some provinces might have chosen to move more cautiously" around a drug that until recently was illegal.

The man leading the charge to challenge Manitoba’s ban on home-grown cannabis says he believes the province may be holding back sales of a new not-for-profit pre-roll meant to raise funds for the court challenge. 

Jesse Lavoie, founder of TobaGrown, announced his TobaGrown pre-roll line earlier this year, meant to raise funds for his organization’s court challenge against the Manitoba government. 

But in March, Lavoie says the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) accepted a range of new SKUs, but not his own, something he speculates may be related to the politics surrounding the product and the movement it’s seeking to help raise funds for. 

Company scores temporary licence for two events in July

Winnipeg-based Delta 9 Cannabis Inc. has received provincial licensing to open what the company believes will be Canada’s first mobile cannabis store. The company plans to open an on-site shop at two upcoming music festivals in Manitoba.

Delta 9 reports on 4/20, no less, that it has received temporary licensing from the Liquor Gaming and Cannabis Authority (LGCA) of Manitoba to open the mobile outlets. The LGCA licenses all retail cannabis stores in the province.

The company’s first-ever mobile store will set up shop at both the 2022 Dauphin Countryfest and the 2022 Rockin’ the Fields Minnedosa music festivals, which are scheduled for early July and late July, respectively.

Legal grow-ops to be licensed and moved into manufacturing or industrial areas

The City of Winnipeg is closing a pair of loopholes that allow medical cannabis grow-ops to sprout up in homes in quiet residential neighbourhoods.

City council's property committee voted unanimously Tuesday to approve bylaw changes that will require Health Canada-approved medical cannabis production facilities to operate within industrial or manufacturing areas.

In a parallel move next week, council's protection committee will consider a report that will require medical cannabis growing operations to be licensed and inspected by the city and pay fines for violating those licences.
