Two Canadian companies are providing a much-needed lifeline to a U.S.-based cannabis retailer in recent deals that would give Thornhill’s Serruya Private Equity and Toronto-based Tilray Inc. an eventual entrypoint into the U.S. cannabis market.

The U.S. is following in Canada’s footprint once again (and why shouldn’t it?) by moving along with steps to legalize and decriminalize cannabis at a federal level. As more and more states are passing legislation to legalize recreational marijuana use with growing support for federal legalization, Canadian companies are working their way into getting a share.Serruya Private Equity is a global private equity firm based in Markham.

The creators of South Park have signed a new deal with ViacomCBS bosses, worth almost US$1 billion, to expand their cartoon world.

One of the most lucrative in television history, the new US$900 million ($1.1 billion) deal will last over six years and include the series and a second South Park movie, according to Bloomberg.

There are also tie-ins to ViacomCBS’ new streaming service, Paramount+.

Insiders claim creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been working on a South Park film for some time, and it is expected to be released on the streaming platform before the end of the year.

It will serve as the follow-up to the pair’s 1999 movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

Jake Johnson missed acting. During the pandemic, the actor wasn’t sure if he’d work again. Instead of waiting, Johnson co-wrote a script with a collaborator from New Girl, director Trent O’Donnell, and went out into the wilderness to shoot a movie about a mother and a son. The end result is Ride the Eagle, which is an authentic, feel-good movie with plenty of cannabis.

Matthew McConaughey just got “Snooped”.

The actor appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Monday to promote his upcoming comedy “The Beach Bum”. McConaughey, 48, reflected on one particular scene with co-star Snoop Dogg.

“There’s a scene where I’m going to Snoop because I’ve got writer’s block and Snoop has the magic weed,” the leading man told Kimmel. “So I went to the prop man to make sure I have the prop weed, which is like crushed oregano.”

The clever old Dogg, however, intercepted McConaughey and managed to swap the fake stuff for the good, good stuff.
